I read the a newspaper recently. The chancellor of Germany held a speech in New York in the UN headquarter. The newspaper wrote that NY is the place Germans love and mystifiy. I think there is some truth in it.

I think there are a couple of reasons. Germans are generally more left-leaning than US-citizens and the East coast is policitally liberal. The skyline is awesome. It is city full of life. Maybe 9/11 also contributed to it. Because it presented NY as a symbol of liberty and Western values.

Many fictional series take NY as city for the story. I can remember Two Broke Girls from the time when I watched shitty TV series. The whole story is a huge scam. They have a little cupcake business and it should portray the American dream from rags to riches. It is such a joke. In NY the prices for the apartments are astromnomical they (the broke girls) could never pay for the location.

I think if you are a conservative could might go for Texas or Florida. Also due to the gun laws, weather and pandemic politics.

Then one could prefer the West coast. California for example Hollywood. If you want to become an actor this is the place to go to. And there is also Silicon valley for IT specialists.

The thing is the US is such a diverse and huge country. It can be a fantastic country to live. However in my point of view only people with money can really enjoy it. If you are poor you are fuck. But I won't dive deep into politics.

It would be cool to go there for vacation. I would probably choose NY. Also for living (in case I had money). I am pretty sure I will never travel to the US due to the lack of money. But I think I can live with that. My other problems are the reason why I cannot live like that.

Which is you favorite destination in the US?

I live in the suburbs of NYC and commute into Manhattan almost everyday. I was born and raised here, and I hate it. Lots of great places and restaurants to visit, but it's miserable otherwise.

The boroughs are becoming to expensive even for the wealthy, now they're moving up here. Lots of amazing murals depicting our city from 1800s and back have been covered up, local supermarkets and homeless shelters have been shut down in order to make room for the new high rises. I hate it here.

West coast isn't much better. You're right that if you're not wealthy, you don't get much benefit living here. It's a struggle for everyone. If I'm still around, I'm hoping I can leave. It's a great place for tourists, but not to live.

If I could chose any place in the US to live otherwise, it'd be Colorado.

Miami, Florida is nice if you have the money to go there. The beaches are excellent.

I second Colorado. Every state has its problems, but I really enjoyed my stay there. That said, I worry about all western states in regards to water shortages and climate change.

I want to go north for a state bordering Canada, perhaps Minnesota or Michigan. The Great Lakes region is supposed to be the best spot in the US to survive climate change.

Why I care about this as someone who does not plan to get very old is beyond me, haha.

As for my 2c as a Floridian - don't come here. It's the most overrated state in the union. We have no major industry besides tourism and basically cannibalize investment from the other states that send us their retirees.

I'd say Hawaii would be the best place to live, if you could afford it. From all evidence, anecdotal anyway, it's very laid-back and serene. You really never hear anything bad news-wise coming out of Hawaii. Very little anyway. And rarely.

My favorite place to live as an American would be any place in the US where I had a family worth billions of good old US dollars. With enough money behind you lots of places in the USA are nice!

New York is hell. Most corrupt state government in the country. Recently stole 1.4 Billion from the Seneca native Americans and NY taxpayers to build a football stadium for the Buffalo Bills. A 10 billion dollar cozy deal for a new JFK airport terminal. 10 billion dollars of taxpayer funds for a hallway. Hochul and Cuomo are both incredibly corrupt. Highest taxes in the Union. Due to NY's strict pandemic policies, we rank last in the union in terms of employment, and we still haven't caught up to pre-pandemic levels.

I have relatives in NY who pay 14,000 a year in property taxes, in a middle class area. They're lower middle class. Completely unaffordable. Plus 8% sales tax and heavy income tax.

Then theres the SAFE act, which criminalized over 1/3 of the legally owned guns in the state. None were turned in, so gun owners are essentially criminals in the eyes of NYS law. The Supreme Court recently overturned NYC's handgun licensing law, and in response, the NYS legislature instantly passed an even more unconstitutional law requiring "social-media checks" before licensing. They know it'll be struck down, but they love the excuse to bully gun owners and police peoples social media. Plus, they get to use taxpayer funds for the inevitable court battle.

You still cannot get a job in NYC without a vaccine pass. In 2022. They simply will not let go. That and our healthcare worker shortage because they fired 10% of them. No medical freedom in this state.

Cost of living. I have a friend in NYC. Cheapest rent he could find was 3000/month and its a literal closet.

Homelessness and crime. Increasing steadily, and then exponentially the last few years.

But problems aside, West NY is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. So I hope one day things get better. Right now, I love North Dakota and Montana. Quiet, respectful, and removed.

I've spent almost my entire life in Portland, Oregon. I think it's becoming overly expensive like so many other places. I'm not sure anywhere in the US is a 'best place', compared to Switzerland, or Australia, New Zealand, etc..., UNLESS you earn enough money. There are some nice small-towns though. Hawaii seems great. At some point something will need to be done on a national scale about housing prices because the current system is heading toward unsustainability for significant portions of the population.
