I think this is one of the biggest root causes to most of our depression in the world and for the suicide rate going up. People need something greater than ourselves to fight against. When there is something greater than ourselves then all of our differences as human beings are nearly void because uniting to fight against it is more important than fighting amongst ourselves. We appreciate each other more. We treat each other better because of it.
For example: This ties into the quote that is the title of this thread. At one point referencing the paleolithic era survival matters most. We needed shelter from the weather (elemental monsters) and protection from dinosaurs (flesh monsters). There was no room for much error if any. We had to stay on our toes and do the right thing at all times because if you didn't you risk suffering in extreme temperatures or being eaten by a t-rex. Families had to unite to overcome obstacles there was barely any physical or mental abuse of their children/family beyond necessary only discipline, there was no over indulging in alcohol due to needing to be fully prepared for immediate danger and threats (ex:spartans).
If you did risk doing harmful things to yourself or family then everyone's future survival was at steak. Alot of times your child surviving and growing into an adult properly and healthy literally determined whether the whole family survived or not.
Now compare that to today we have evolved and had so many advancements that most people don't ever have to worry about shelter or ever having to defend themselves against anything dangerous. But now it's gotten to the point where everything is so comfortable for majority of people (especially in America which ironically has the highest depression rate it's ever had the past few years) people actually have gotten bored and unnapreciative. They have no purpose. There is nothing going on. Nothing of importance. No meaning. The luxuries that our intelligence as human beings has brought us has gone unappreciated by majority of people. We have destroyed nature, become lethargic, etc. People can afford to slack, indulge in simple pleasures, etc.
Think about it. Would your parents even conceive of abusing you as a child when knowing risking your physical and mental well being could result in not only yours but their death aswell?
Would they truly be able to afford to get drunk and go on a screaming tirade at their family if there was danger and things to get done that required full coordination like fighting a wild animal would require?
Now look at the world. We got too advanced for our own good or should I say we dont appreciate our advancements like we should. We don't have those obvious troubles anymore like shelter, animals at every corner to worry about, starvation, etc. Hell instead of dying from starvation we are dying from eating too much (Murica).
It's no coincidence that indigenous tribes have the lowest stress levels and suicide rate compared to Americans who have the highest stress levels and one of the highest suicide rates despite having more material possessions, resources, and leisure activities.
Without the monsters to unite us as a group/tribe to fight against we now as you can see in the world have made monsters out of each other. Race, religion , politics, abuse, etc.
Beowulf
"You are the monster slayer."
"We are the monsters now," he says, making no effort to hide his disdain and self-loathing. "We have become the trolls and demons."
"The time of heroes is dead, Wiglaf. The Christ God has killed it…leaving mankind nothing but weeping martyrs and fear…and shame."
