Thanks to another thread, I started thinking about this. Are you an impulsive person would you say?

I suppose the most impulsive things I've done have been expensive purchases. Usually to do with (creative) work and quite often- fairly unwise. They rarely paid for themselves in terms of generating more money.

A few initial decisions to change my life drastically have been sort of impulsive too- to study a second degree, go freelance again. Sometimes, I have an idea and just run with it because I know I'm unhappy as I am and it's something new to focus on.

What about you? Do you deliberate over everything in life or, do you just wing it? Do you think out attitude towards life also affects our suicide method intentions and whether we will act impulsively there?

When I was 6 I randomly decided to stand up on a table and start dancing and stomping my feet aggressively while people were below me

Wow, I can't think of anything. I'm a very unimpulsive person. I wish I was more impulsive, but there's always this barrier in my mind that makes me think everything through two, three, four, or even five tines before I can put it into action.

I know what you mean. I'm not sure I am a massively impulsive person generally. Maybe that's good though- right? I think too much of it can land you in hot water!

Friends of my Mum's used to go out for a drive over a weekend and just, deliberately get lost (with a map with them for their return journey of course) to see what they would come across. I really liked that idea. Not that I can drive!

Still, I often used to just see what was going on in the local area. I went to a kite festival one weekend and a glass festival/ exhibition another doing that and- both were awesome. Back in the days when I bothered to leave the house! Maybe you could try that though- if you wanted to be more impulsive. Being a 'tourist' where you live, you can discover all sorts.

When I swing hypomanic I do lots of impulsive things. Most of which I generally regret later. :blarg:

I have to ask because I know you are the same age as me - do you not have a license at all or just do not have a car? Because yet another reason I feel like a total freak on earth is i never even got my learners permit nevermind license. Way too scary for me. I don't trust other drivers and I have no sense of direction.

Can't really think of any thing impulsive I have ever done. I'm definitely a planner. The most impulsive thing I can come up with honestly is when I was a teenager going to the mall spur of the moment.

No, it's really not. Bold and strong-willed people tend to be more on the impulsive side. I missed out on so many opportunities in life simply because I couldn't make up my mind fast enough.

That sounds really cool. Something I always wanted to do, but never had the courage for. I would always get so lost in the preparations that I forgot what I was even preparing for and lost interest in the whole project.

I had quite a few lessons to drive years ago. My boss was insistent that I learnt. But, I was a complete nervous wreck! I was terrible at reading the road, reading other drivers. Same as you- my directional sense is awful. Plus, I couldn't even seem to drive 'straight' on a straight road! Lol! Honestly, it's a mercy to all road and pavement users that I didn't pursue it! Honestly, the amount of things I did wrong is so humiliating. Maybe not quite as bad as a former colleague at work though. She litterally ploughed into a set of traffic cones apparently! Her instructor was like- WTF?!!

My driving instructor told me I wasn't the worst... praise indeed. One student he had insisted on clapping his hands after sneezing so that 'a fairy wouldn't die'. Even if they might in a road collision...

I tended to vary in performance I think. Some lessons seemed to go quite well but then, I'd do something awful! It's not the sort of situation you can get away with doing even one awful lapse really on your own- is it? So, I'm relieved I didn't pursue it.

I got to the point where I hated the job so, I just outright told my boss what a liability I was trying to drive. Seeing as you can get everything delivered now anyway, not driving wasn't such a big deal. It would be useful of course but I couldn't live with hurting someone which I pretty much certainly would have if I'd continued.

So- you have a license but no car? Do you practice still now and then? Do you want me to dare you to do something impulsive today? Nothing major. Try a new food or something. 😉

No, I don't even have my license! I've actually never been in the driver seat of a car. Nice to see someone else in the same boat.

That part about the guy clapping made me laugh hysterically. And that is obviously a form of OCD, which I have. It never ceases to me the different things people with ocd obsess about.

I will think of your post next time I have the opportunity to do something impulsive. Trying a new food isn't a bad idea, I am a very picky eater!

Most spur of the moment aspect that I can think of is when I was in my teens and was checking livestock in the woods and came across a timber rattlesnake that had just killed a calve that I was looking for, so I returned the favor and killed the rattler.

Do not mind rattlers. however, when they kill what puts food in my stomach and a roof over my head, so sad, so bad, and goodbye snake.

That's impressive- battled a snake... I wasn't expecting that!

I thought I saw a snake walking through a park once. My friend thought it sounded like a slow worm (even though it was super quick.) She was like- 'Did it have eye lids?' Like I hung around long enough to peer into it's face. We scared the shit out of each other! And disappeared in different directions- thankfully.

I 'feel' like I do a lot of things impulsively, but I also think its just the way I get things done/decisions made. Very over analytical and find it hard to accept I have done enough 'shopping around' or researching options. And know I beat myself up bad if I retrospectively feel like I fell for an unnecessary marketing gimmick or missed a deal. Even if I commit to an advance travel booking unless its a fully planned out day/itinerary, I 'feel' like its impulsive. But it really isn't! Kinda annoyingly unsettling over nothing too - sets off the self hate spirals!

I have always respected rattlers, but I am not afraid of them. I have been around them all my life.

I never ever kill any wildlife unless it is completely necessary and he was a king timber rattler, which just means, at least the language that I was taught, was a male snake. I have seen so many 2 foot plus high coiled rattlers and when they are going to strike their head is in the middle of the coil and they will dip the front of their head down, and it is a 100% certainty that they will strike.

The worst that I ever ran into was either a rabid skunk, ticked off badger or wolverine. All 3 of them are much worse than any timber rattler always.

Thank you so much for the very kind message and have a great rest of this weekend and upcoming week.

Walter

All of my decisions that are not extremely overthought out are impulsive. I have no in-between. It's hard to say which decisions I've made were the most impulsive because it's almost 50/50 on all choices I've ever made.

maybe when i met up with a stranger i met online on whisper after talking to him for like, 2 or 3 days and went back to his place alone with him. long story short, very bad idea. or perhaps the time i ran away from home during a fight with my mom. i'm not usually an impulsive person, almost only when i'm in a state of extreme emotional distress (as i was during the aforementioned situations.)

I packed as much as I could into a backpack and suitcase and took a train ride 500 miles (804km) away from home to start over. I slept in someone's spare bedroom for a few months until I could get an air mattress and apartment of my own. It ultimately didn't "fix" my life, but I don't regret doing it either.
