I was thinking about it. I don't think I can change my mind but it could be nice to talk to someone I don't know and open myself up completely. I think I would feel relieved to say everything on my mind to a complete stranger.

Give it a try, in that case.

I've called mental health helplines in the past and generally it has been a good experience, can't remember if I called a suicide hotline though.
Mental health hotlines tend to be manned by people who have dealt with their own mental health issues. They offer a listening ear and I found them non judgemental.

In the US, if they think you have plans or you make comments that appear you have put thought into suicide, the hotline will send police to your house and give police details of your conversation. If police make you go to hospital to be "checked out", you will be forced to stay at least 2 nights in the hospital on a PEC, no matter how you answer questions in the ER. In other words, being "checked out" at the ER is a guarantee for at least a 2 day commitment in the psyche ward and if there are no beds, you will be forced to stay in the ER for 2 days. The psychiatrist doesn't even need to see you. He will do whatever the social worker in the ER recommends. It can be helpful to talk to a hotline and relieve stress, but be aware emergency services "the police" can be called.

You'll be forced to go to a psych ward. If you are lucky, someone will just talk to you.
