I know that a lot of shotgun suicide failures are because the person shot under the chin. But do mouth shots really have a 0% fail rate?

No method is 100% failproof, but shotgun to head methods, if done correctly, have a 98, 99% chance of killing you, and 1% of chance of leaving you a vegetable or leaving you disfigured (maybe even both). There's a lot of information in a megathread here. You should check it out if you're considering this method to make sure you don't fail, because failing with a method agressive like this is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.

The purpose of the gun in mouth is to destroy the brain stem. There's very little chance of survival as your brain would have lost all nerve communications pathways with the rest out your body.

There is no method that never fails. Folks think jumping is a sure thing if only it's high enough. The world record for longest fall (without a parachute) that was survived is 33,000 feet. A woman feel six miles and ended up with nothing more than a limp! Even Golden Gate jumpers who die are not always lucky enough to die immediately upon impact. Some end up drowning in the cold waters after breaking a whole lot of bones. OMG! Think about how hellish it would be to be in agony from damaging your body so very much with a 75 mph impact with some very hard water only to survive and then have to suffer death by drowning.

I guess if you want certainty you can cut your head off with a chainsaw like a teen boy in Russia actually did. Decapitation is always fatal, though there is the risk that you'll back out or the saw will run out of gas as you start the cut and you end up surviving.

Same here. I picked shotgun to head years before finding this site and its total fascination with Nembutal from a Mexican veterinarian merchant of death. I am horrified by shotgun survival stories, which are so rare, but even a mere handful are still more than enough to terrify me.

You can find pics of a teen girl who shot herself with a handgun, destroying her face. She was very attractive at the age of 16 or so and seeing her before pic it's very difficult to imagine how someone so young & pretty could possibly want to die. Her after pic in her early-20s has her with a bizarre looking new face that seems to be quite distorted, though I have no idea how good or bad it might have looked on the skull of the original owner.

I can only hope that a 12-guage is even faster at producing death than the .357 revolver that Bud Dwyer shot himself with on live TV in 1987. A shotgun is about .73 caliber vs that .357 caliber and throws about 4 times as much lead. Look that up on YouTube if you haven't seen that yet. You can see how he instantly falls to the ground with an exit wound on the top of his head and with blood pouring out of his nose. It sure appears to be instant death or at least as close to instant as is possible. On YouTube you can also find a video of a California man who stops his pickup on the highway and a news chopper records as he gets a shotgun out of his burning truck and eventually shoots himself in the head. Even filming from that distance it's stunning how much blood comes rushing out of his head. Within a matter of seconds the stream of blood is like 20 feet long and is covering a couple lanes of traffic. Before seeing that I didn't fully appreciate how very much a head wound could bleed, even though every shotgun suicide pic is quite a blood bath. It's as if you poured a gallon of blood upon the ground.

I remember a story about a woman who destroyed her face with a .40 caliber pistol under her chin. It seem that a shot under the chin is something that every survivor has in common or at least that's the case every time I've been able to confirm where they placed the barrel. Then there was a woman who failed to CTB with a .357 revolver, which this forum advocates as an effective caliber if using a handgun. Yet then there was a lawyer who sure was very dead after a shot to her temple with her .357.

The megathread on this, and other associated threads, seem to be saying to aim into the mouth at about a 10-degree angle up from the horizontal. As has been mentioned, you're trying to destroy the brainstem; a shotgun is best for this, as accuracy is less than paramount with a weapon whose output is essentially a +4 Cone of Disintegration...

Buck shot isn't going to have a chance to spread out at all when it's a contact wound.

Shotgun? Jumping? as discussed, so unreliable.
Why not use inert gas? 100% effective IF done correctly, and not chicken out last minute.
I would love to hear argument AGAINST inert gas, Educate me,

Sure, 100% effective IF DONE CORRECTLY. And, as we all know, we are so fortunate to not live in some nasty universe where everything that can go wrong typically does go wrong. Jumping would also be 100% effective if only folks had the discipline needed to land head first onto concrete. None of that feet first nonsense into a cushiony conifer!

I'm not familiar enough with inert gas to fully explore its cons at this moment. Though given that all doctor assisted suicide & euthanasia in the world uses either Nembutal or Seconal, I'm guessing there must be some downside to inert gas. If it was all positives then all these doctors would be using it to kill people rather than using lesser barbs.

I believe that blowing out one's brainstem is the fastest and most painless method of all. Shotguns do it best, statistically.

Assembling apparatus is more complex than some people want to deal with.
Purchasing reliable gas can be challenging for some people, in some areas.
Can be difficult to store the apparatus unobtrusively prior to attempt.
Requires 40 minutes without interruption.
Potentially a long enough time to unconsciousness that SI is a significant consideration.
Moderately expensive.

As has been stated, nothing has a 0% fail rate, but assuming due diligence for learning to aim properly, shotgun to the mouth is as close to 0% as you're likely to find.

YES! Thank you, @Soul, that is probably the most important disqualifier for the eb/ig method: if you have difficulty breathing --COPD, etc.-- and exhaling CO2, the method simply won't work.

^^^ This, this is what make me hesitate to CTB by gun, not that I'm a chicken but I sure don't want to still end up breathing after use a method like a shotgun. Get a shotgun is not a problem for me as my background check it perfectly clean, and I have enough money to buy a shotgun. It just I worry about this outcome.

Perhaps I should stick with my original method, jump of a 1,000 feet bridge (still trying to go around as it is a tourist bridge). I sure don't want someone to pull me back and I end up in mental hospital and my CTB freedom will be forever taken away from me. Well if I manage to able to jump, and still survive a 300 meters jump, I hope I lost all my memory, as grief is too painful, I don't want to be paralyze and still remember my grief.

Under the chin shot failures are probably due to flinching and raising the chin so that only the lower face is affected. Through the mouth gives straight shot at hind brain and medulla. Those targets will guarantee success especially with a 12 ga and buckshot. Most likely a closed casket memorial service.

I found this at quora, and now I begin to doubt shot in the mouth.

quote: [[
Healthcare at New York (2011-present)

WARNING GRAPHIC: There was a man in an area I used to work as an EMT, years ago, who shot himself with a shotgun, barrel into his mouth at an angle that SHOULD HAVE blown his entire head off…. Somehow it didn't really touch the brain. Everything from his forehead down to his lower jaw were missing, except for part of his tongue. He was breathing, tongue moving around violently, and I bet if he had a mouth that could help form human sounds for him, he would have been screaming in pain. If I remember correctly, he did somehow still have one eye left. He got sedated and intubated, transported to a trauma center, and survived. He needed complete facial reconstruction and years of surgery. I believe he ultimately succeeded in committing suicide several years later. He was very much aware of what happened following pulling that trigger. ]] end quote

Seriously this is the worst case it can turn out. Now I doubt shot in the mouth.

I have to believe the shooter flinched and looked up. A shot straight back through the mouth goes direct towards the hindbrain.

I just would not want to be bothered with all the preparation, making the exit bag, attaching the piping system to the bottles, checking it works....why spend you last moments with some complicated DIY (and I've always been crap at it, so I'm sure to get someting wrong) when you can take a clean shot at your brainstem and not even notice you died?

Well you better not get your angle wrong ! This is in the mouth and then pointed UPWARDS, you want to point horizontally, at just a slight upward angle so you hit the brainstem at the back of your head !

There are a lot of factors to determine this, such as the angle in which the barrel is pointed at, where the barrel is placed at (AVOID UNDERNEATH THE CHIN as that greatly increases the chance of failure), the kind of caliber/ammo/cartridge/load/shot used for the firearm, whether you flinch and move the barrel as the firearm discharges (DON'T TRY TO ANTICIPATE THE SHOT WHEN YOU SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER), and of course, the kind of firearm used (pistol, long gun, etc.).
