Basically title. Worried that I might get shipped off to some institution if I mess things up.

IDK about the UK.
I had an ex girlfriend who tried comitting suicide, and then warned me- I wasn't able to get to her so I warned her parents at the time.
(this was years ago)
her parents called the police/ambulance. They took her to the hospital, and forced her to stay with a bunch of crazies for 2-3 days if i remember correctly.
This was in canada, so, idk how different it is, but, IMO it would be a pretty cold and traumatizing experience being rescued by a bunch of out of touch bloomers.

It depends on the situation, where you're found etc. If you're in a public place the police can section you for up to 72 hours while they assess you. If found at home you may not.

UK you will get taken to a safe place. Depending how you act you can talk yourself out of it within 18 hours. Depending when it is and how busy it is. If your a on Friday forget it till the Monday though. None of the pros who access. You work after hours or on a weekend I have found. Talked myself out of those places 3 times min so far...
Damn grammer has left me tonight sorry

You will be taken to hospital and treated if necessary, then a psychiatrist will see you. The psychiatrist is the one who decides if you'll be sectioned or not

The police can also 'section' you (a different section of the mental health act). If the police think you are a danger to yourself or others they can take you into custody to a mental health hospital. Its not as scary as it sounds in my experience; they didn't physically grab me or anything like that. The police dont necessarily understand mental health problems, but I think they are trained how to de-escalate situations. Not that I'm a fan of the police or anything!

You have to be actively suicidal to get taken onto a ward in a mental health trust hospital though. They don't have enough beds or staff! Unless you are in a really bad state they'll probably refer you to other mental health services instead.

They don't grab you if you behave.... My first breakdown I was covered in bruises after because I decided that me a 5ft3 women would take on 6 way larger police officers.... I was determined to get my way... Yea that really worked locked up for 24 hours then

Yeah it seems to vary a bit on how stretched they are locally. I think a lot of the time you can talk your way out of being taken in.

I have bruises on my thighs from where they pulled me over the barrier. The police were actually really nice to me though, as weird as that may sound, they are generally very sympathetic and kind to the suicidal.

Yea I had bruises on my arms, upper and lower legs, and my back.
When they came to my home once when I had the second breakdown the police were so kind, where as the hospital didn't give a shit and left me in a very bad situation!
The police are called to so many mental health cases as in reality there is no proper system for those in crisis, out of hours there is little to no one, weekends there is no one, in hours resources are limited.
