I've read that a lot of help lines call the police a lot of times. What happens if the police get called for a suicide attempt?

If your location is known, expect a knock on the door. Regardless of whether you're making an attempt or not, if you tell somebody that you might make an attempt and the call the police, you'll get a visit.

When I live in a shelter years ago and I was calling for help, telling all my friends I wanted to die, I got the police knocking on my door every single day. Nothing else, no forced therapy or referrals until I actually took physical action but my history of visits probably sped that up.

I haven't had them called on me by a hotline, so it might be different, but they'll pound on your door and shout until you open it. Then they'll question you on what you were doing, come inside, and watch you get dressed, if you're not. They won't let you out of their sight for a millisecond. They'll pick up the things you were using and escort you to the ambulance nicely if you don't try anything.

Yup it massively depends on the nature of the report to the police and your behaviour. Unless you are severely emotionally distraught I think it's relatively easy to talk out of these things. Depends, it's hard to say.

Yup it seems a worrying question for someone that's here, if you want to call a helpline it's probably not time to be on this forum.

I have been picked up 3 times by the police - I told them that they will be added to my Christmas card list soon.!
My first attempt to jumping, 4 patrol cars turned up and I was taken to hospital voluntary and discharged later that evening.when the court order was made to put my son in care,I said I was going to kill myself and was met by police and an ambulance waiting outside the court.I was put on a 136 section and taken to hospital.
I convinced them I was OK and I was allowed to go.so I went straight back to jump again but could not go through with it but because I drew attention to myself people called the police and they knew it was me because of my first attempt at the same bridge.I had gone home and got drunk but they came banging on my door at 3am -I was told I had to go to hospital voluntary or be sectioned.As other message said,they don't leave your side.This episode resulted in a 3 week stay on a psy ward where I am still on leave from.
I was also picked up at home after visiting the bridge to write my husbands headstone.The police have a duty of care and take all threats or attempted suicide seriously.I am sure helplines are governed by the same duty of care.

I've had a lot of experience with this due to overprotective friends after my first attempt. ( no longer an issue)
They would often get called due to something very minor that I had done nothing life threatening.
No matter how calmly I explained I was fine they insisted on taking me to emergency and if refused using an involuntary assessment order. The hospital then say oh your suicidal ok cool you can go now bye. Extremely frustrating but the police here have to do it.

That's why I am never calling those suicidal help lines because I am way too scared of the police getting involved

When i attempted off a bridge the police were called. They just seemed irritated at my attempt, asked me if i had been drinking and drove me to a psychiatric unit. None of them give a shit, they just carry out protocol.

They take you to a hospital and then you get sent to a psych ward.
