This is a topic that's commonly discussed/debated, and while I did try to debate it in a discord server, I got called a nihilist for being realistic, so I'm curious, what does SS think?
Personally, I think that the world will end either way, no many how much CO2 we cut down on, how much plastic we recycle, we can never get rid of it completely. Cars and trains and fuel is needed to make life much easier and for more convenient transportation, albeit car-centric places do sometimes make it a bit inconvenient due to how you can't really walk from point A to B, but that's a whole other topic that's also debated about. In the end, the world will most likely be destroyed because of us humans. Even if we do our best to recycle, there's still the leftovers of the plate that goes into the trash can, soon enough, the trash can will be filled, although slower than it would've if we didn't recycle. What do you guys think? Is there a way to somehow miraculously save the planet?
Also, I know atleast one person will think of going to Mars or some other planet to colonize, but let's be real, we'd just kill that one too, and it'd take decades if not centuries for us to be that advanced enough to colonize a whole other planet.

i've got money on this all ending in disaster i mean we will completely run out of resource within 200 years goodbye oil gas coal helium trees
the only way to continue existing is if we build asteroid harvesters to bring back resource to earth but that is not on the horizon

I think well destroy our planet/resources before the sun explodes and kills us. If I had to put money on it, first the wars will be for energy/oil/electricity then it'll be water once enough people have been killed or we have enough energy

by the time civilization has evolved to that kind of tech/science, we'd already be dead lmao. think about it, say, theoretically, humans DID find a way to stop pollution 100%, that'd take a big breakthrough in science and engineering, and while science and tech evolves, so do weapons. Now, in this future where we found a stop to ALL pollution, then I'd say if we're intelligent enough to stop pollution, we'd have weapons atleast x7 or x8 stronger and deadlier, what if a war happens in that time and say, an a-bomb gets dropped? or multiple a-bombs get dropped? that'd do so much shit to the planet and basically wipe atleast 2/16th of the population or something, and how much pollution and radiation would come out of that would be mind boggling. and thats only when we've evolved enough to solve an issue in the planet. I think once we've made asteroid harvesters we'd already be skeletons

The world is bound to end either way . Eventually all stars will cool off , leaving behind those dwarf things. Even after that , only black holes remain, until they collapse upon one another, and scattering into nothingness. How long will it take? Idk a big number of zeroes after 10. But here I'll just assume you're talking about human civilization in particular. I'll go ahead and shrink it even further. Yes, the future looks like a garbage fire waiting to happen for most of humanity. A few though, dude, the truly influential few will definitely outlive the remaining vast majority. Cuz if we look at it objectively, most of the survival based problems that come in our mind today can be solved with money( again, for a very few) , leaving behind what, aging? Was just reading an article a couple days ago about some jackass researchers finding a potential clue to longevity that'll help make tons of progress in the field.
So yeah, I'll also become a nihilist here and confidently say we're fucked either way.

Mhm. It was annoying as fuck debating with the ppl in the server too because they completely twisted my argument to make me look like I'm being a negativity ball, when I was only being realistic.. truly a fucked up world

Climate change isn't a worldending threat.
There are a number of things that will happen once things get really bad.
  • more extreme weather, mostly droughts and floods
  • stronger hurricanes and typhoons, and a stronger monsoon season
  • rising sea levels will affect coastal regions, many cities, islands and strips of land will likely be lost
  • progressing desertification
  • yet unknown changes to the ecosystem due to many species dying out because they aren't adapted enough
  • water shortages
NONE of these are world-ending threats, though. Seriously. Many of these are local problems, and even the things that aren't are far from enough to wipe us out.
Don't get me wrong, the human cost of climate change is immense. Millions will die and even more will be displaced. It is for sure one of the most pressing problems of our time. But it's not a world-ender, far from it.

At the end of it, we'll settle into a new equilibrium. And in the future, there might even be technological solutions that will allow us to fix this colossal fuck-up.

Fair point, but in the end, the world will still end, which I think is probably (most likely) going to be by humans, whether it's from climate change, radiation and nuclear catastrophe, or other. And if that doesn't happen, I'd like to quote thevaccumguy's post. The sun will still transform into a red giant and end us all, either way, the world will end.

I've always thought one day the world will end and it brings me some peace knowing one day it will. I've never really liked humans, they're like a parasite of hatred and corruption and if there were none, the world would finally be more at peace and lowkey wanna see this world burn and collapse just to start over. That has always been a dream of mine to witness but I probably never will.

Yeah, it'll be a long ass time before that happens. In the meantime I'm listening to Chevelle and chill-ing, basically all we can do is wait tbh

I don't think we have to worry about the end of our sun's lifespan. No chance anyone is still around by then to observe it.

There are things I am scared of, but the end of the world is not one of these things. World war 3 is a slight concern, but the doctrine of mutually assured destruction (MAD) has kept us all safe for the last 80 years. As long as the logic of MAD holds, I can still feel comfortable with how things are. And I'm pretty sure it'll keep holding.

That's also fair, the question has arisen though, how will humanity end?
I'm curious about that now.

The sun won't enter its red giant phase for 6 billion years. There is no threat to life on Earth for an incredibly long time. Our lifetimes from this point are at most a few decades.

As for saving humans specifically, I prefer to focus on doing what little I can to care for the ecosystem and vulnerable flora/fauna species in general. If humans found a way to shrink the population to something sustainable, most of our problems would be solved.

The population is definitely fucked, I'd say the earth is already a bit overpopulated right now, and it's still yet to grow. I'd say a way to atleast control the population is to do a kind of 1 child only law, better yet, 1 child per 3 families.

It's my opinion that the world has already ended several times already, in "civilization resets".

From "Genesis" to "Revelation", and then it loops back around again.

We're just along for the ride, although granted the ride sucks ass.

Yeah that's how I feel. Like the issues listed in this thread won't end the world, but they'll end our world as we know it so to speak. Society will evolve to overcome the new challenges and will eventually change to be something unrecognizable to us today. I just hope it ends up as something better for normal people.

global warming was a known threat for ages to oil companies n such, and they specifically polluted the discourse with pseudoscience to make people believe the scientists were talking trash. you can probably find a youtube video essay or two talking about it.

i think with how it's being treated nowadays, we will probably survive it. it wouldn't have been such an issue if we'd started taking measures when we first learnt of it, but better late than never.

however... i think that, since us humans like messing with stuff before we know what it does, this kind of thing will happen again. as long as we let rich, greedy people exist, they'll silence the scientists and die before they can face the concequences of their actions.

no matter what, power will always corrupt. i think that's just part of how humans work, and prioritising yourself and your friends isn't nessercerily a bad thing, but it means that those with power will always do so, even if it means others suffer. in this hellhole where if you work for 40 years you might have enough savings to retire for a year, where university costs way too much and a starter-level job requires a PHD?

....yeah, i think id rather die.

I agree that OUR world (ie humans) will very likely end at some point. I too believe that- unless we take VERY drastic measures- ie. stop people reproducing. OR- some genius comes up with a TRULY sustainable and efficient boundless energy source, plus- alternatives to the toxic things we produce and how much we destroy to produce them, plus- a way to reverse the damage we've already done. I think we're only delaying the inevitable- where the planet simply can't support us anymore. Of course- I think we definitely SHOULD be trying to prolong catastrophic failure for as long as possible but I guess I just CAN'T see it being avoided.

I expect it will be a slow process though. Increasing violent weather and 'natural' disasters. Perhaps more difficulty in producing food- leading to higher competition- leading to conflict/war perhaps. Maybe even AI will take over eventually- who knows?

Still- I always find it fascinating when we ask this question: 'when will the world end?' I expect most of the time- we mean us. Without us- the world will keep on living. I bet it would thrive in fact. Of course, it will depend on just how many species we have made extinct by that point as to what will be left to enjoy what's left but I bet SOMETHING will survive. Cockroaches maybe...

Our world will certainly end at one point. Like how dinosaurs died, human beings will inevitably die. It's a matter of when. I'm pretty sure we all would have died by then. And another question is how. Well, the sun could explode or the air could be too polluted to live. Unless some genius comes up with a plan, then yeah...humanity is doomed. Frankly, I'm not too concerned as it could be many many years later when we are all already dead.

I call a window seat!! You heard it hear first so don't BS me.

It's inevitable that it will be destroyed in some form as far as humanity is concerned. Assuming we don't launch nukes at some point or create another fun super germ (aside, anyone play the Nuclear War boardgame?) humanity makes no effort to cooperate to get things done so no off-planet habitats coming, or even a real solution to pollution and clean water. Even if we did everything right as the human race and did all the eco stuff we could there's not much to say the environmental events will go back to pleasant blue skies and calm seas. And if that did, what's to stop an asteroid from smashing us? Bruce Willis and Co? Like getting in great shape then getting hit by a bus.

I'd just rather not see my relatives go through it. Future generations, don't know them.

I wish the transition to post-human society will complete soon. AI will do everything better than human, but without the consciousness to experience pain and sufferings. Ultimately there will be no need for humans. AI bots will be talking to AI bots themselves, serving each other. A sheer waste of energy. What for? Maybe human had begun as AI bots of the gods, too. Then gods became bored and disappeared. Humans are left on their own, meaninglessly fighting each other.

Whenever I think about it, I often think of the dream I had within the last several months. I've had a couple of dreams about the earth slowly forming a crack due to neutron star approaching the earth and tearing it apart. All the humans would be sucked out of earth as if the gravity reversed. It was one of the scariest and nightmare dream. Very similar to "Evacuate Earth" I've seen from National Geographic.

it's a bit scary to think about if I'm being honest, despite not having too much fear for death. I think it will go like: the sun stops burning, making the world turns gradually colder and lives started to die away. and then the core of the dying sun will explode, marking the end for this universe. but tbh, we are probably gonna start to die before that day due to pollution lmao. damn, I feel bad for the people that will be living at those days

This climate shit annoys me. The world has been around for billions of years and life is insanely resilient. Look up mass extinction events, extremeophiles, tardigrades. Most life is in the ocean and has not been grossly affected from the presence of humanity.

If you mean civilization, again it is doubtful mankind is going to disappear. Human beings are extremely efficient and it would take a seriously major event to wipe us off; if that happened, you gotta wonder if that was our fault for not preventing it, since we have no intelligent competitors to blame.

So when you have this scaremongering about the world ending from pollution it is not true. Yes it is bad to pollute the environment and clean solutions are effective. But lot of it is apocalyptic religion and salespeople trying to sell gimmicks and Tesla cars. I am too old to give a shit.
