It is weird question for me. I tried both. I would have prefered the monotonous work. Though not because I like it more. I know for sure that intellectual work can make me pretty manic. Thus it is quite dangerous. This is why I tried monotonous/ easy work instead. It made me extremely depressed. It was absolutely crippling. I felt so ashamed but it was torture. I was a wreck. I tried it so fucking hard. I would really like being able to work a normal/ easy 9 to 5 job. But for real I detest the work. Honestly I would prefer the mindless work because it is less dangerous. Maybe I am unable to work anyway. Though I have once tried a somewhat intellectual job and it was way better than the monotonous work. I had a tiny success. This is what I cling to.

I had this question in mind because it is my daily fight with this cynical illness. Though also David Foster Wallace worked for a short period of time as a bus driver. Someone who knew him was shocked. There is probably the most talented writer of this generation and now he is driving a bus. Though I liked DFW was not conceited and also did average work.

I am scared that the intellectual work will make me eventually manic/ kills me. Though it seems like I don't have any other option. It is pretty dangerous and I am really fragile. On the other hand I see no other path which might lead to a stable income. In general I doubt a lot that I will be able to have a normal job. There are so many contra arguments. Though I am determined to fight till the bitter, cynical end.

To add one thing. Maybe it is condescending to call it "easy" work. As DFW wrote in "The Pale King" it is kind of amazing or heroic how some people can endure horrible monotonous/ boring work, Many say DFW's work on boredom killed him. This is why we should not underestimate it.
What do you prefer?

Interesting question.

Monotonous work, to me, seems like menial, simple, boring, repetitive work, there are no surprises, it's very groundhog day
Intellectual work on the other hand a bit more demanding, requires a hint of creativity, problem solving and playing it by ear

There's definitely perks to each, while 'M' is quite mind numbing it's also reliable, secure, can do it with your eyes closed
But 'I' has a bit more flavour, bit more fun and a bit more exciting, but equally is also stressful and unpredictable, maybe even chaotic

Is it a cop out if I say why not both? :ahhha:

I like creative work- anything that challenges my mind and forces me to use the little grey cells…

Monotonous and easy because it being easy is the only way I could possibly get it done.

Although ultimately I prefer not working at all.

I do challenging, intellectual work. Occasionally I do enjoy it, but not every day. Any work becomes a tedious chore when you do it for 40 hours a week. I stay for the for the higher pay and job security it provides. I think I'd prefer mindless work. Mindless work becomes sort of automatic after a while. That makes the time pass easier and it prevents work from completely depleting your energy every day. However, everything is getting so expensive, so I want to be grateful for where I'm at. I'm not that grateful, but I want to be.

It depends on the day, but typically intellectual work. I like solving problems and doing analytical work. It can distract me when I'm really down sometimes and gives me a slight boost when I'm able to solve a problem or provide something of use to my team.

Days with no meetings where I'm just cleaning data or creating lists are essential to keep me balanced though. That work can also be rewarding in a way since if I'm so low I can't do my other work, at least something is getting done.

So I think like LoveYoux I'd say both tbh

Mildly challenging intellectual work in reasonable measure. IE you can turn off your brain for 8 hours of constant monotonous work but if I had to *think* for all 8 hours of my shift I'd be completely exhausted and done with life.

Challenging intellectual work for me, anything other than that and my brain will get bored easily.

Hmmm... Cool question. I guess I'd say both like others have mentioned. All ultimately depends on the day and where my sick fucked off mind is at.
