From what I heard, from 13th of august, yt is implementing an ai "age verification" system, meaning that they'll ask for our id aka personal data. With other words, we'll get no privacy what so ever. First the never ending spam of never ending ads, half of them being exiplit p*rn stuff too (and yet yt creators has to cencor the most absurd things) and now this. This takes the cake for me, I'm officially boycotting yt and y'all should too. Obiovsly I'm not gonna force you bc at the end of the day it's your choice, but keep in mind that by supporting yt, you support their idea of giving us no privacy while censoring basicly everything exept their own ads. Also, there are other options out there, like twitch, tiktok and this yt clone called rumble I belive it was.

So who is with me? We need to put an end to yt's outrageous shenanigans once and for all!

This isn't how the internet was meant to be. When it very first became publicly available, it was largely open and free. Until corporations and lawyers got interested and ruined it.

The Internet wasn't meant to be free or public. It was a government communication system initially designed to interconnect diverse computer setups around the country to share information efficiently.

That it became available to the public kind of just happened... and once that happened, it was bound to be exploited commercially as almost everything else is.

Meanwhile for the OP...

This is the first I'm hearing about age verification for Youtube, but it makes sense. I mean, it's almost impossible to really implement online as the adult film industry has known for a very long time... but if Youtube wants to at least try, I don't see why they can't. It isn't "censorship" to try and keep kids out of adult areas. This very site has a policy against underage members, so if you're boycotting Youtube you're going to have to boycott this site and a lot of other places too.

YT actually said they's ask for ID? Itch.io updated their age verification recently, and all they did was add a date of birth that you have to enter. Also just use Brave, Brave blocks all yt ads.
(Tbf yt gotta start marking itself as a porn site with all the 18+ ads.)
I also heard someone uploaded an entire my little pony episode as a yt ad and it got approved.

I dug into this a little. From what I read, Youtube is going to start testing an AI-based algorithm based on who knows what to determine user's ages. IF they correctly identify you as a legal adult, you should notice no changes. IF they correctly identify you as under 18, then restrictions to access some content makes sense.

IF they incorrectly identify you as under 18 when you are in fact over 18, it sounds like they have several options to verify your age. I saw several listed:

1. Attempt to identify your age via your email address. Your email address you use on Youtube will be checked across the Web to see if they can link you to anything that otherwise indicates your being an adult. They already have your email address anyway in this case.

2. Credit/debit card in your name. Since you'd have to be an adult to have one, that would prove your age. If you already pay for things like Youtube Premium or have a bank linked for your video channel, they already have this info and you should be validated this way.

3. Use your phone or computer webcam to take and send a photo of yourself that will be used to see if you "look" old enough. The photo is supposedly deleted after over-18 is "confirmed" and that's that. I've seen this used on some adult Web sites before.

4. Submit your photo ID. This is the one people cringe about, but it's far down the list after several other options you have available. Also, I get people being leery of this sort of thing and wanting anonymity or whatever... but honestly, we aren't really anonymous online anyway. I mean, to other users we are reasonably anonymous but not to our Internet Service Provider, or most sites we access, or to our governments... so it's hard for me to get too up in arms about it. And as far as "freedoms" go for US users like me, it's one thing to be against voter ID legislations but quite another to claim we have a "right" to access Youtube.

I think this is more about protecting minors from sensitive contact. I know nothing about YouTube's plans. I think they may only ask people to submit IDs whose age cannot be determined by their algorithms. I've been a YouTube member for many years. I'm a Premium member which means I have submitted a credit card in my name. That will probably be sufficient to prove my age. I'm very surprised that sites that provide exclusively explicit adult content haven't been required by US law (where I live) for users to submit photo IDs to prevent minors from getting in. This would have major privacy concerns as these type of type of sites could experience data breaches and have their users' IDs leaked which would cause embarrassment for some of these users.

maybe they will finally stop advertising erectile dysfunction pills to me

I feel like this whole verification thing would be easy to get around though but the process of doing so would be long and inconvienent maybe everyone will move to Vimeo or Dailymotion or create a free patreon tier
( I wouldn't watch anything if everyone decided to move to Bitchute or Vidlii )

also you'd think they would be cautious about doing this because what if someone attempted to shoot up the headquarters again because of this age verification thing + having less views and monetization because your SFW video is marked down as 18+ for saying the word fuck or talking about a crime that happened or a non sexual graphic topic

I can understand having age restrictions and such, don't get me wrong, what I'm worried about is yt getting our personal info and using it in the market or some shit. Sorry if I didn't explain myself very well, I was rly tired last night.

they probably will sell personal info like they are already doing. I doubt anything will change with the whole age verification thing for most website its the unfortunete reality we live in.

No matter how much backslash mastercard and visa got for taking down pretty much whole itch.io they still didnt change thier stance on it. So i really doubt youtube under attack will change it ;(

Past my negativity i really do hope this will change and we wont forced to give out our personal info to huge corporations. I think the whole "think of the children" scapegoat is really disgusting.

Much love 🤗

Considering I have been on YouTube for more than 18 years now, it shouldn't be an issue for me.
Even if all SASU members boycotted YouTube it wouldn't make a dent though. But I do understand the sentiment.

I do pay for YouTube Premium because I spend more time on YouTube than I do watching TV shows or movies these days. But the creators who have embedded ads in the middle of their videos are what really irks me.

But I think this is more to prevent minors from viewing age restricted videos if I'm not mistaken. But yes, all of them, and I do mean all of them, misuse our data. Everyone from the major corporations to the government.

To be blunt... none of us are anonymous. All of our info is out there multiple times over. People willingly sign up for free stuff and give their personal info away, then scream how they don't want anyone to know things.

I'm not saying some of it isn't scary or bothersome... but the ship sailed long ago. Also, banks and phone and internet companies get hacked seemingly every other month now, and you have to give your info to them... so any hacker who wants your stuff has it already.
