Let's say one ends up a vegetable, would it be possible to request passive euthanasia (no food / water / devices to sustain life) in countries where it's legal? I read people in vegetable states can communicate with eyes.

I'm sorry for asking this I just have a huge fear of ending a vegetable but I really want to exit this cruel existence.

I just know that I'm going to end up a vegetable :ehh:

One could get lucky and end up enjoying vegetable life, tho, idk. Then tech could come along and save the vegetable, turn it into a fruit or a dyson sphere.

Yes. This is possible in some european countries. It´s a written statement called living will. You can prohibit life-prolonging treatments in it. I always carry a copy with me. My living will states that it is also valid in the event of a failed suicide

Yes, I actually have such statement (Belgium), but at this moment it is not possible to make an official government registration for this, so I have 3 copies: one at home, one at the home of a family member and one being held by my GP. You need only one, but if they never find it or someone destroys it, you have nothing.

This only applies for refusing medical treatment though, they'd still give me food but I'm refusing any medical treatment if that would ever happen to me (or if I ever develop dementia, get a brain tumor,...).

Wow that's good news... that would definitely diminish my fear of ending a vegetable and having to live like that. I'm going to check if in my country such law is valid, thanks for the information

By that time, soylent green will become a thing and you'll just be on someone's salad with ranch dressing.

Great thanks for the information! If someone can't eat or drink and needs a feeding tube, do you know if that counts as medical treatment? I just wish there would be a way to die if I end up a vegetable lol.

Belgium is pretty nice by the way.

I'm not sure, to be honest. You need to specifically state which kind of medical treatments you don't want.

Be aware these kind of laws only exist in a few progressive countries, unfortunately. And every country has it's own implementation of such law, so what I just said won't even apply for you as you live in a different country.

honestly all im saying is social organizations should check on people that end up like this minimum every 6 months to see if they want euthanasia because no one else is going to do it definitely not friends or family. They have machines where the person can even still speak through computer machines so they can get out. Like are you serious the poor man is trapped in his body. I can only imagine, and the article says the parents are fighting? Wow what about him! Hes the one who's stuck not them. Honestly it should be illegal for family members to do this is very selfish.

Omg I agree it's so selfish to keep a person like that!!! I bet my selfish parents would do the same. You're so right they should be checked in to see if they want euthanasia by some organization. Ahhh it's awful how family members think living is ALWAYS better... even if your suffering 24/7, so selfish and stupid. It should definitely be illegal!

this really makes me reconsider stuff. I don't want to attempt in my state with my parents where living will isn't allowed. I don't want to risk this. Ahhhhh why is it so hard to chose for my body? Humanity is so stupid

when you hear stories like the guy who jumped 40 stories and survived, or the guy who survived a bullet in the head, of the guy who survived the golden bridge, or the girl who survived an airplane crash, or the guy who survived underwater in a sunk boat...

In my country we have Internet page where we sign in and see our own medical reports and medical descriptions. There is an option to refuse some medical care witch could lead you to be alive but vegetable.

Before this system person could write which care they oppose and sign it with 2 witnesses and leave it to hospital and ask it to be added to their medical info. Maybe there was even forms for it.
