It would seem obvious at first glance that suicide by train is lethal. Colliding with a train at 100 kmph, putting your neck or head on the rails. It would likely kill you.

Or not ? What is fiction, what isn't ?

A quote
https://www.reddit.com/r/morbidques...do_people_not_die_when_attempting_suicide_by/

'Laying your head on the track would not work decapitating, as most trains have some sort of guard in front of the wheels. I've read most attempts and most survivors are standing on the track facing the train. Some reflex and jump away in the last moment, some survive because the impact of the braking train isn't enough, some trains are pretty pointy, so the person is thrown to side and some are just plain Lucky.''

Theer are some things you don't want to survive.

I've seen a video of a guy that survived. . Idk how long but he was squirming around. I also saw a video where a guy got hit by a train and there were body parts flying all over. I guess it depends how you position yourself.

After a bit more research, plenty of contradictions.

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_methods#Rail '
Suicide is accomplished by positioning oneself on a railway track when a train approaches or in advance, or driving a car onto the tracks.[66] Failed attempts may result in profound injuries, such as massive fractures, amputations, concussion and severe mental and physical handicapping.[67]

Unlike on underground railways, in suicides involving above-ground railway lines, the victim will often simply stand or lie on the tracks, waiting for the arrival of the train. As the trains usually travel at high speeds (usually between 80 and 200 km/h), the driver is usually unable to bring the train to a halt before the collision. This type of suicide may be traumatizing to the driver of the train and may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder.[68]

Suicides on tracks may take place through the person either jumping onto, walking, lying or sitting on the tracks. Lying on the tracks may result in decapitation. Accidents resulting from people jumping onto the tracks usually occur at daytime. Accidents including people walking, lying or sitting on the tracks usually occur at night when the driver's visibility is reduced, reducing the chance of a failed suicide. People who commit suicide in this manner usually stay at or around the place for the suicide for an extended period of time before the actual suicide'

Any chance people move their head they put on the tracks at the last moment, if not in a reflex ?

I realize this is quite morbid and gruesome.

My opinion is, if youre using methods such as train or truck that means you are in a hurry. It could end very badly when you suicide in a hurry.

Jumping in front of a train is inconsistent it´s like being hit by a car in a hit and run it´s not certain you will die, however if you choose to lay your head on the train tracks to be decapitated by the train that is fool proof but takes balls.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Train suicide is too unpredictable.

Does anyone know about the mechanics/physics ? Type/front of train, odds the train will push/bump you forward without driving over you first ...

Maybe taking something like anxiety medication and alcohol and falling asleep on the tracks would do it ,when I was looking for ways before getting on this site , I thought about that ..

A guy in my country did this by drinking himself unconscious. I don't know how he got himself on the tracks. Another guy failed an lost a arm trying the same thing. I don't know how you could not wake up by the train though. I slept by tracks for awhile ear against the ground an would wake up to it even 500 meters down the line. These where freight trains though. The vibrations where very powerful. Stuff of nightmares.

Yeah where I live there's track literally everywhere, I could drive 20 mins and be there , there easily accessible ,from every direction and town ..If I did it I'd do it at night take benzos and drink , lay half on half off the track , so it just runs me right over and not wake up ..This would be my 3rd plan if I can't get partial,to work , my other opinions CO ..

Did you hear about the guy who lost a arm an a leg. He all right now. Could still be a chance paramedics reach you in time. I guess the alcohol thinning would make you bleed out pretty quick tho.

It's a joke lol. He's all right now... uh yes. Rails arnt exactly comfy. Mayby bring a pillow. You'd have to know what time the trains operate on an how do you know ul end up in that position once benzodrunkd off ur face.

You read my mind with the pillow , I'd hope to not move but of course that might be an issue and the train schedule I'd go on them as soon as dark fell and would think one would pass by then ..I did do a google search and a 19 year old model was taking photos on the tracks in the day , went to move to another track and got hit and killed and this was in the day ..

Laying down on the tracks isn't going to work as the train engine has 'guards' in front of the wheels. It might work but one mustn't risk it. Also the trains that have pointed fronts are not going to work that good, the flatter the front the better. There are many many things to consider. Like it should be done at night not during the day. The driver WILL pull the emergency brakes as soon as he sees a man on the tracks. Now if the train was going at around 125kmph, by the train it will make contact with the person its velocity will be reduced to half of it or even less if we assume that the driver sees you when you are around 100metres away. It may not be a sudden death at that reduced velocity. So the person has to make sure that he steps on the tracks when the train is around 50 metres from him. Thats why it should be done at night. To hide until the time the person wants to stand on the tracks. Now when the guy pulls the emergency brakes the train's velocity will not reduce much. Also it is crucial to lean forward a little facing the train. This will ensure direct impact with the head and the sudden change in momentum will lead to the head snapping backwards. This sudden snap in a fraction of a second will severe the veretebral column under the brain stem. I cant hypothesize what will happen to the rest of body as there are many many factors in play. Also one mustn't attempt near a station or near platforms as trains usually slow down near platforms and the drivers are more alert near platforms. Also it must be done far away from a city. This is because there is some possibilty that the person doesn't die instantaneously. If the train is far away from a city, the chances of saving the person in time and going to a hospital are low. Well nobody would wish to die a slow agonising death cursing his method while his body is in shambles. So overall, its a good method if the person is far away from a city and the train is at least at around 80-100 kmph DURING contact so it should be around 130-140 intially.
Also it will take balls to do such a thing. No don't have alcohol you will mess up with all these details. You need to stay sharp and alert so as not to make a mistake. If its not instantaneous, believe me you will regret it.

Also while attempting at night it is easy to get confused by the headlights of the train and stand on the wrong track. You will look like an idiot if the train passes from some other track !

I think someone here used that method. Invisible Anarchist?

A couple things I've read:
-Make sure not to do it when the train is slowing down to approach the station.
-Make sure it's far enough from a city that you won't get help in time
- Do not do this where the driver or other passengers can see you. It'll mess them up.
Like everyone else said, decapitation is probably the most reliable method of train suicide, plus it would make the conductor less likely to develop PTSD.

@Prime ,

Very good points !

Lying down - any odds ? I could imagine jumping in front of a train in desperation, but putting my neck on the rails to wait for a nice decapitation ? I just can't imagine doing that.

I have thought about this before but ruled it out because of the trauma to the driver and inconvenience to the passengers.

My fear was that i would flinch/back out at the last moment and live with horrific injuries.

I thought about decapitation by train in 2015. They actually have YouTube videos of trains going though my home town. The first thing I noticed was the buffers - which could have really complicated things. Plus these coal trains wind though these mountains pretty slowly.

Umm it all sounds interesting and a sure fire way to go but I don't think a person as weak willed like me could pull such a stunt. Most people can't. It will take leviathan courage and an extremely shitty life to make a man so desperate that he does somethinf like this. If the person survives, then he won't be good enough to eat and poop properly for the rest of his life let alone reattempt. There are better, safer and more painless ways to go.

Even if one puts ones neck on the rails ... can you be certain that it will be cut off nicely ?

I've read about 'wheel protection' may not apply everywhere, or will there be enough room 'under' the train or will the head be pushed forward by the front of the train, thus preventing a 'nice' slice and cause a different result ? I can't locate that article that mentioned 'wheel protection'.

All methods can kill you. All methods have possibility of failure. Hope this helps.
