Let me preface to say sorry for any typos. Before I fucked my eyes up 10 months ago I wanted to post this on here. I got curious after learning about the suicide rates of the top countries that are suicidal and then got curious and wanted to find a list of countries with the highest number of suicides but I couldn't find it soooo I made one myself of sheer boredom Sorry if this is the worst project ever I just felt I needed to post this cause i feel this wasted my time doing this back then. Before my eyes got fucked I wanted to do every country but heyy whatever.

Before I start let me preface to say that most of these don't even include suicides that go unreported so the exact numbers may be higher. I want to apologize beforehand if any of this is incorrect so if anyone knows more about the figures then correct me. I've listed the following by the most populated countries first which usually have the most suicides and then start to go all over the place because I couldn't find reliable data for a lot countries in Africa, Asia, South America, etc. I also apologize for not listing every country or even your country cause it takes too long especially due to my eye problems. Another thing to keep in mind is that many countries don't have reliable data especially highly religious ones and/or developing ones. I'll say no reliable data when I couldn't find exact data or sources but with some that I did find there was conflicting information. Also i have to admit that I couldn't finish this project and couldn't find sources for 6 of the countries so I put that I 'Couldn't find any information due to my eye problems' so if anyone wants to help find any sources that'd be helpful.

Also I used this cross multiplication equation to help:

(Suicide Rate of country /100,000 x X/Total population of country)

Another thing to keep in mind is that suicide rates are estimated by number of reported cases so the exact suicide rate is unknown just as the exact number of suicides are unknown. For example in highly religious countries suicides may most likely be way under reported due to stigma, shame etc. I hope someone will look at this cause this took a while to find and collect for me. Ok let's start.

Over 800,000 to 1 million+ people kill themselves each year. Again estimates could be be higher given the stigma and lack of reliable data.
Nearly 30% of all suicides worldwide occur in India and China. https://www.befrienders.org/suicide-statistics

I'm surprise no one wants to discuss this just like the Reddit threads about the suicide rates of countries which had so much discussion but nothing here. I have done a lot of pointless posts but this takes the cake.
Like do people wonder why China or India make up most suicides? Cause of their massive population sizes or is there more to it than just that obviously? I forgot the source but I read somewhere that the US may be third but we're first in gun suicides which is kinda interesting eh. Or how pesticides are more common in suicides in developing countries. Or religion plays a role good or bad. Or what the fuck ever.

It's understandable why China is in top considering the beyond dystopian shit that goes in there and also because of the immense amount of stress from school/work but this one happens in general in Asia because they value work and school a lot. India kinda surprises me tho and so do Turkey and Poland because they're very religious countries.

Some weeks ago I found out that Greenland is the most suicidal area in the world and it's quite a curious case: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2009/10/why-do-so-many-greenlanders-kill-themselves.html this is a well written and detailed article about the situation in Greenland.

Yea the topic of the countries with the highest suicide rates is what got me curious to try to find the actual numbers of the countries with highest number of suicides. Like while Greenland may have one of the highest suicide rates they also have a very small population. Not trying to down play it btw.

Imho, the causes of suicide can be explored better by looking at rates of attempted suicide, not successful suicide. For example, white men account for 70% of suicides in the US. But men are also 3 times more likely to be successful per attempt, and women actually attempt 2-3 times more often. So deeper, more honest investigation reveals women are more distressed than men, despite the suicide rate.

This is why the stigma around suicide is counter-productive. We need more reporting on attempts.

That's a lot of research you've done there. Accounting for population, based on 2019 data, the highest suicide rate per 100,000 reads something like as follows:
  1. Lesotho - 72.4
  2. Guyana - 40.3
  3. Eswatini - 29.4
  4. South Korea - 28.6
  5. Kiribati - 28.3
  6. Federated States of Micronesia - 28.2
  7. Lithuania - 26.1
  8. Suriname - 25.4
  9. Russia - 25.1
  10. South Africa - 23.5
