i'm not a particularly athletic person, but i like taking walks in nature. it helps to take my mind off of things, and gives me somewhere to put all my extra energy.

I used to be really into weight lifting. I'd do it every day, eat tons of protien powder and other protien heavy foods, make sure I got enough sleep etc.
That was before the quarantine and my mental health has plummeted since. Now I'll do it 1 day a week at best. It doesn't help my mindstate at all and probably makes it worse tbh but it temporarily makes me feel less awful about my body so i guess that's the only benefit for me.

I do exercise at home. I wish I could go outside but I'd be forced to see couples and that's not good for my mental health. Overall I'd say it's extremely helpful, specially resistance training.

One of the reasons I jogged two miles a day every day for five years was because of all this bullshit that I'd look better, feel better, have improved sleep and be less depressed with improved mental functioning. Instead, all that regular moderate exercise did for me was drain me of what little energy I had.

Moderate physical exercise is NOT some sort of "magical" panacea for everybody who sticks with it. There are also plenty of severe depressives who are noted athletes who commit suicide. Don't buy into the hype.

I used to go to the gym and my mental state improved quite a bit, I always felt really good after working out. I know it releases certain endorphins when you're working out so it's proven to be good for you. Once I stopped and got lazy my mood declined, now I don't even wanna go for a walk, but I'd definitely say exercise is good.

Exercise sucks. It never stops being painful, exhausting, and I never stopped feeling sore the next day. A few years ago I was going to the gym like twice a week for over six months and it never got better like people kept saying it would. My mood didn't even improve, I was still overly depressed and lonely.

That's just my experience though. Only you can test if it works for you on your own.

I believe you should always exercise if you can. It might not magically make you feel better, but it will contribute to your overall health, and that may have an indirect positive influence on your mood. To put it another way, if your physical health is suffering it will almost certainly have a negative effect on your mood.
The trick i found with exercise is not to force it. If you make yourself do stuff you don't enjoy, you won't stick at it. Find something you enjoy or that is productive too and do that. I'm currently carrying leaves out of the woods in my backpack. It gets me out, gets me sunlight and exercise (both of which help me sleep) and next year I shall hopefully have lovely leaf mould compost for the yarden.

I did the gym thing for two years. It was fine then. Moved and never started back up. I wasn't depressed then.

Now, I just force myself out for a gentle walk. It helps that I have a little dog that loves the walk so I do it for both of us. Some days it is really hard to psych myself up for it, some days I don't.

I know that getting out into the woods is the best for us and I am fortunate that I have access to that, a remote private area. Right now, the fall colors are absolutely gorgeous. Don't know if it is the exercise that helps or just the mental distraction of it all. Sometimes, when we walk back in the door, the depressed sadness seems to be waiting for me. There is a respite for a while, though, and I will take it if I can.

The positive effects of physical activity on mental health is actually well documented. Of course not everyone is able to exercise regularly though, for example if you are so damn depressed you struggle to do neccesities like eating or taking care of hygiene, exercising is out of the question. I know because I was like that. But nowadays, for the past few months, I lift weights 5-6 times a week, at home. It's routine at this point.

Being stressed has to count as an exercise at this point. It's so exhausting it's basically exercise right
