I have not tried these yet, have taken this information from various sources, and some tips listed below, I discovered myself. They are not guaranteed to work. This is an extremely long thread, I am sorry.
Your survival instinct kicks in when you're in danger - well, obviously. It is impossible to ignore the signs your mind and body give you in a situation you might find yourself in. These tips may help you distract yourself:
[For jumping, hanging or anything involving a sudden action] - You need to count down for this one. Anything higher than 10 may not work well, so stick below that number. While you're counting, complete the action before you reach the last number. For example, if you're counting to 10, jump/let go etc. on 4. That way, your body won't expect it and will provide a better chance for it to happen. If this doesn't work the first time, try another number in between. Make sure it's a number you don't use/hear often, because that will also decrease the chances of survival instinct kicking in completely.
[For consuming anything] - Not many people prefer this method since it's most likely to fail, but here is some advice anyway. Remember as a child, drinking/eating something immediately after some disgusting medicine? I recommend you do the same for this occasion, too. Your senses will be distracted by the taste of what you consume second, and if your crazy lucky, your body might also think what you took wasn't poison, but medicine. You might want to pretend it's medecine too, to play tricks with your survival instincts. For example, if you're taking pills, immediately drink/eat something after to distract yourself, and wait. Your body will believe the substance is trying to cure you.
[If you use a method that will take a large amount of time] - Plan out the entire scenario in you're head as it is happening. Your mind will be tricked into thinking about the thought of it happening, not that fact that it actually is. It might relieve some pressure as well.
I am aware of the fact that's I lack professional knowledge. I do not expect these to work for many people, and I also assume that people have heard of some of these in the past. Please, if you have any suggestions on how else you could trick your survival instinct, comment below.
It took a lot of my strength to post this.
