I'm committed to taking my own life but i can't deny I wake up in cold sweats thinking about the eternity of punishment I might face. I mean this world is cruel so why wouldn't the all-powerful being that created it be cruel as well? I also think about the chance of me coming back in some lower form like the Hindu reincarnation suggest, i mean everything else in existence seems to work in cycles so why not life? These fears that I might be leaving one existence just to end up in a worse one are going to make my last moment full of panic and distress... how can i get over it? Thanks

I know that absolutely all death probably comes with fear so i expect I'll just have to deal with the uncertainty. still there is a bit off me that wants to leave with these fears resolved, i don't want to leave with negative energy. (im atheist, but rather cover all my bases)

well I cant get myself to believe in a forgiving god, the only realistic type of god i can think of is some great distant omnipotent being with a cold gaze and an indifferent attitude. Yea, life is suffering.

There won't be eternal hell or eternal heaven. They will be in heaven or hell until their merits or sins ends. There might not be any hell. Some ppl believe there is hell and heaven while others believe they are on earth.

Try as I might, I also can't get over these nagging thoughts. There could be a god. And it could be malevolent, enjoy inflicting pain. I guess I reason I'm dying anyway and it's unlikely I'll change my perspectives in some way to make a significant difference. Might as well get over with this pain sooner rather than later (when things are very likely to be worse). Good luck whatever you choose.

Yeah I do think about this a decent amount. Religion as a whole probably isn't true imo but there's always that possibility. In any case, you don't know if you're gonna be in Catholic hell, Protestant hell, Muslim hell(which is pretty brutal btw, I mean I can almost understand why people become terrorists if they think the alternative is that shit), or even reincarnate as a tapeworm or a rock or a hepatitis C virus or something. And like FTL said, you're gonna die anyway, so whether you kill yourself or not isn't gonna change that. So to an extent I've thrown my hands up and just accepted that there's always the possibility of things getting worse after I die. But it just doesn't seem too likely given the nature of religion and how it formed, as a whole it seems like something completely man-made.

Thanks, I'd accept a prayer from a believer though, if u can spare some time. My prayer wouldn't mean a damn since i have zero faith but i'd be grateful anyways. Just in case.

Fear of Hell? You have as much reason to believe God will reward you, punish you, get reincarnated, or simply cease to be.

If you go to the idea of an afterlife, you're throwing reason out the window -- and then so why think any claim has merit? Sure, you may fear Hell, but if God send you to Hell while you have no good reason for believing in Hell, the universe is royally fucked-up. So fucked-up, why even think God uses any rules for our afterlife fates? Maybe it is totally random.

The ancients believed in cruel gods that saw us as their play thing, to be entertained by our blind fumbling through life and shrieks of laughter at our pain. Seems much more believable then "your friendly neighborhood all powerful titan". But yes, i do get what your saying and it terrifies me lol

Objectively speaking, the worse form of life on this planet, is the human being... I like Hinduism overall, but it has stupidities like any other religion, in order to make it more popular and reachable. People perceive themselves as the cherry on the cake, so of course, being human is the best thing you can promise them... Really? Look at your pets. Most pets have much better lives then their owners. We even kill them to prevent their suffering, which is rarely done for humans... Even the wild animals, at least have their relative freedom (we are total slaves to the society) and suffer mostly only physical pain (while we suffer both physically and mentally).

So, IMO, the worse thing that can happen, is to be incarnated again as a human. And well, you are already on that boat.. This is really something concerning, but I have no reasons to believe that the cause would be how you died, but other factors - like regrets, guilt, desires, etc., which are mostly subjective. If you don't want to be punished, you must first stop punishing yourself.

I you believe in the reincarnation, there are actually much more important aspects that you must follow. It's important what state of mind you die with, not how you died biologically. The problem with suicide is that it's commonly an act of desperation, guilt, which is not a right state of mind. Dying of natural cause is not much better either, so it's a generally a complex topic how to die "properly", so you have a better chance facing whatever is out there after you die.

I don't believe in hell or punishment or anything like that. Anyone who has been "visited" by a spirit of a recently deceased loved one has always said they have felt a sense of peace and calm.

I do think about it, but i try not to linger too much.
The afterlife is pure uncertainty, a roll of the dice if you will, and it's as likely to be anything just as much as anything else if it makes sense.
Everyone has to roll the dice at some point so I'd rather do it in the near future than after decades of pain and suffering.

If everything is meaningless then everything is boring lol
It is indeed boring, but it is also a great relief. If everything is meaningless I dont have to be scared about any afterlife.

I see it like this @ForgetAboutMe Look at your hands look at your body? how did you come to be how do you know that you exist? if you think of it like that reincarnation in a sense does make sense as the most possible reality so if that's the case the only real problem you might have is reincarnating into animal upon animal insect's even however those moments probably will all fade away quickly only for you to be reincarnated into another human body "eventually" that is what i think might happen

----> option 2 There really is a god and your either screwed or your forgiven reincarnated and then the cycle starts again who knows?

The whole afterlife thing is actually a phobia of mine. Irrational, persistent, unrelenting. I know that logically it does not make much sense, but people still came up with it and keep preaching it so many years later. Hell that, heaven this, but even if it's a good afterlife, the entire concept scares me, at times i have nightmares of there being literally anything after the time on Earth is over.

It's not just the punitive afterlife like Hell, Tartaros, Uffern, etc. but the presumably good ones, too. Heaven, Tian, Valhalla... Well, actually, Valhalla is not all that bad because it's not eternal and it's bound to perish at some point.

It's most likely not the fear of afterlife itself, but eternity, i feel like humans are made with an expiration date and most concept of the afterlife assume a time perioud much, or infinitely, longer than that. Eternity is the real scary thing, but afterlife as a whole is not much better either.

I am not scared of that because I don't believe free will exist, so concept of karma, punishment or gratification doesn't make sense.
Suicide considered taboo because of fear of death and social reasons.

But I am scared if life itself cannot be truely escaped.

The more i read these responses, the more i realize there is no answer to this question and even if i had a 1000 year of life i would not be able to answer these. Therefore, I'm just going to treat this like my first kiss or pulling my first tooth. Basically, its a simple part of growing up that requires you to take a huge leap of faith that will probably not be as bad as you think.

I personally hope for a peaceful Astral Plane where you can exist and think without burdening an beautiful world with a stinky, decaying skin suit of a body. I can see why someone would be afraid of this or not want this and I can't blame them.

I don't like the idea of not existing even after death. I guess I'm too young to appreciate oblivion.
