Netflix has edited the controversial suicide scene from "Thirteen Reasons Why" two years after the show originally premiered.

"We've heard from many young people that '13 Reasons Why' encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help—often for the first time," Netflix said in a statement Monday. "As we prepare to launch season three later this summer, we've been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we've decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from season one."

The scene now depicts actress Katherine Langford staring at her own reflection in the mirror before cutting to her parents' reaction in a later scene. There is no longer any depiction of the character's suicide.

"encouraged them to get help for the first time"...

Boy are they gonna be disappointed. Suicide rate will just spike again when all those young folks realize what a scam mental healthcare is, and that their life is now ruined by their Label.

Way to go, Netflix!

The creators of this show ignored just about every piece of professional advice out there and did everything they shouldn't have done because they knew it would make for good drama and improve their ratings. That's clearly all they care about. Now they're pretending they removed this scene out of concern other than as another publicity stunt.

I found it to be absolute emotionally exploitative garbage flaunting itself as some sort of meaningful exploration of suicide. It is hours I wish I could get back. They had such an opportunity to explore mental illness and the pressures of that age range. Instead, they glorify suicide as an effective means towards vindication and convey this idea you get to live on and hear the apologies and see justice done to all who wronged you. That is a fucking terrible message especially as I know what my own suicidal fantasies were like at that age. It just smacks of a bad revenge fantasy blended with a high school drama that in of itself is a convoluted mess with poor character arcs. Loaded with shock value at the expense of the viewer. Veneered with the pretence of giving a damn to make it seem more legitimate, all in the interest of greenbacks to the extent of ignoring professional advice because sensation sells I guess... That and no meaningful mention of avenues open to rape victims. Utterly despicable TV.

Netflix is owned by psychopaths unfortunately. This means they will send messaging through it that shapes thinking and promotes certain ideas they want the population to embrace as reality or to encourage certain behaviors. Psychopaths want to reshape society into how they view the world and it's working to our detriment. I try to avoid watching certain types of shows on there as soon as I feel uncomfortable when they promote like infidelity, drug addiction, or if it's too violent. Even though I myself am corrupted by how I have been living and propaganda that I was subjected to on tv when I was young now I see it more clearly in those shows on there and I get angry.

Interesting that they wait 2 years for this. 13 reasons why can't really be affecting the CTB rate can it?

It's sad when I think about that. So many young kids that really could have lived happy lives.

Wait... so is the final episode just 5 mins shorter, or did they insert more stuff they picked up from the cutting room floor?

I only watched the series to see how bad it could get. Unfortunately, it never got 'funny bad', it just remained 'cringey bad'.

I remember a year or so ago the makers said they wouldn't sensor the show even after all the backlash from that scene. Yet here we are lol wonder what made them change their mind

I went back and watched some of it and I couldn't agree more. It really does come off like a revenge suicide and sells the idea that you get to witness the aftermath. Maybe you can, but we don't know that and I do agree that's a dangerous visual for young people who are in this frame of mind. I've also talked about the high school drama stuff and how when younger people were on this site, how I always tried to explain that they won't be within those 4 walls once they're done with it and that nobody will give a shit about what happened in high school anymore. This was obviously much more than just high school drama with a rape being involved, but I agree that there was no real avenue presented either.

None of that is to downplay what young people feel or anything, their issues could be just as strong as anyone of any age. But sometimes the root for them really is because of how bad high school life is and they can't see past that yet.

I'm not surprised young people watched this and suicides spiked though, it would be different for adults to watch it but for a young mind it can be super influential.
