There's a scene in Return of the King that always gives me chills. Theoden is about to lead his army to fight the hordes of Mordor, and he makes this great speech, "A sword day! A red day, and the sun rises!!" Then he leads the Eorlingas in yelling the word "Death!" several times.
It literally just occurred to me that they were primarily wishing death upon their enemies. Eowyn and Merry just look traumatized because they're not expecting to survive. Like, "Oh, I guess the special on tap is death today. Okay, then. Death it is." I'd always just vaguely assumed the whole army was suicidal for some reason. I thought it was odd.
