These are rare footage of a Vietnamese monk's self-immolation dated 1963. I have always considered death by fire to be the purest and most sublime death, but I never believed it was possible to burn without screaming or agony. And then I saw this footage; it's incredible. Can this be real? This is what spirituality is capable of; it overcomes nature, and nothing can stand against it...

I can't really even evisage the discipline needed to ignore the pain. There was a monk I believe that raised one arm almost all of his life in some sort or religious devotion. But, can you imagine the discomfort doing that every day?
