The phrase " a permanent solution to a temporary problem "

Does that saying drive any one else here mad ?

How do they know my problem is temporary ?

I gave up talking about suicide to people a long time back

To some, the problem is temporary and can be helped with therapy and medication... To others... It's a permanent problem that will eat them away till the end of their life. So the saying isn't completely inaccurate, but it really does annoy me to keep hearing that.

I usually think to myself that suicide is not only a solution to my current problems, but also to all my future problems. It's almost too good to be true..

Yes lol! That's gotta be the worst comment. I think sure it can apply in some cases when young people act impulsively because things are much more intense when u are young. You haven't hardened up yet and events feel more devastating. I think many more suicides are probably due to longterm difficult if not impossible problems to solve. It's a build up of shit over time. I'm sorry but there is not always long term or permanent solutions to all problems.

Oh my god, you don't even know how many fucking times I've gotten this shit, and it really does drive me nuts. I absolutely cannot bring suicide up with anyone I don't know well enough because every single time, without fault, they will spit out a stupid, uneducated sentence like this and it feels like a slap to the face. And then I have to awkwardly wriggle my way out of that conversation, because it always feels like I'm getting berated.

Another thing that really pisses me off is when people tell me it's selfish, or that "suicide is not the answer". Oh, no, no, you don't get it. It absolutely is the answer.

But yes, such drivel pisses the absolute fuck out of me. That was a turning point, realising that those slogans were meaningless, in fact, they were worse than that, they were compacting the pain further. I really want to squash them down the throats of anyone uttering such garbage. Only problem is I don't have access to an ivory tower.

Realise might soound a bit bitter! don't think I am generally, just those hollow soundbites can actually hurt and crawl under your skin. In a bad way.

I've been alive for 27 years and suicidal ideation and mental illness has been with me the entire time.

Sounds like a permanent problem to me.

I'd drives me mad. As if no problem can EVER be permanent. What if my problem permanent? Then what do I do? Just keep repeating this frase to myself while living in suffering till I die anyway of old age? And all because those people can't be bothered to think about suicide in a more complex way and do some soul searching because they are afraid of doing it so they'd rather blame it on you and pretend like it's us who don't understand something and not them.

I understand your frustration, but this saying may ring true for some. Especially for younger people that may still have time to get themselves into a happier life.

Many people are hardwired to be helpful, and as most of these folks don't seem to get pro-choice in the context of suicide. As such, their default position is to trot out well-meaning but unhelpful platitudes ranging from the patronising to the straight out insulting.

What gets really frustrating is when there is an underlying permanent problem, but the symptoms are temporary but recurring. The first dozen or so times, it might feel like a string of temporary problems. Eventually, the realisation is that this is a permanent problem requiring a permanent solution of some description.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have said this many times. It sounds like something a drunk with 4 days sober would say at an AA meeting.

Substitute "suicide" with "drugs" and I have two answers.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but one phrase which drives me crazy is when I'm told either I don't love Jesus enough, or when they imply that if I only had faith, my depression would go away... (Like *Magic* , right??)

Why is being selfish bad? It's good to look out for others, but not at the expense of my health, physical or mental.

Most decisions a human makes are selfish, and its okay, but when its suicide, selflessness suddenly becomes a virtue.

People like simple sayings and philosophical razors because it makes them feel in control. It's a lot easier to ignore or not fear the horrible things if you can dismiss them with a few words, and so people do so.

Yeah the phrase is overused and an umbrella statement that doesn't take into account that for some people, it is a permanent problem.

The thing with that is in the long run that just makes things worse. Dismissing the hard shit first instead of facing it when it appears. Yes its easier to ignore or not fear the horrible but its better to do the hard part first and fix it before it gets worse.

Anti-choice propaganda, man.

it's something people say when they have a great life and assume that suddenly we want to die because of a little scuffle or because we failed a job interview, broke up with a partner, or whatever. Plenty of problems are very obviously permanent. They think that our insignificant perspective of life is that a small problem is what makes us suicidal.

Like everything in politics, they turn things around and tell you the opposite of reality. It's a big business that requires a permanent problem to be profitable, and medications are engineered to maintain illnesses, not to cure them.
