Here I am, just waiting for my poison of choice to arrive. A pigeon flew in through the open window and is just sitting there, been there for ten hours. (Btw, it's an old joke among friends that I am a dove, that birds are my sisters.) She has not touched the crumbled bread or water I put out for her.

In a way, I am obviously worried that she might be sick. In a way, the immovable calm is like mine, refusing to be kicked out of this house and out of a heart. Folklore says that a if a person's heart is held in thrall by a wily master/mistress (as in Tam Lin, as in Stardust), you should fight and save them. Shrinks tell you to slink away, find a meek partner who is happy to lick your arsehole, and never mind if they touch your heart truly.

I don't know what to make of this, but tell me what you would feel. Is this hope and life and transformation that flew in, or death?

Nevermore

(Sorry, I couldn't help it. I agree that it's a pigeon, and may be sick. I'd call a bird rescue organization and ask what to do.)

If it had this week's winning euromillions lottery ticket in its beak I would call it an omen

Yeah I suppose I asked for it. Sigh. I am not crawling with the maggots of irrationality, but can't I wonder a little? There was much less dryness in the answers the cat-omen lady got. :(

I know, more so because it also seems to be dying herself.

In this city I know what they would do, they would kill it. They had a programme against pigeons breeding, which worked rather well so I am surprised one ended flying in. It's not a pigeon-infested city.

I thought black crows represented death? But a pigeon, i'm not so sure about that one.

Just use the pumpkin you stole from me and make a scarecrow, it will scare your little visitor off back to the town square.

Apparently all birds represent both life to the fullest and death in our collective subconscious or something. But in folklore, yeah it pretty much says I will snuff it soon.

Aw, maybe they'd make friends instead? The more the merrier.

How's the bird today?

If you call a bird rescue organization (not Animal Services or whatever) they won't kill the bird unless that's the only humane thing.

Maybe she's testing your pro-choice boundaries.

She'd never moved from the spot for 13 hours when I went to sleep. Soon woke up to her noises moving about, she seemed to be well. Opened the window for her, but she did not rush out. Went back to sleep, she left when I was asleep.

I think she just came to get a rest in a warm place, tell me I need to snuff it in a hurry and keep me company for a night. Very happy she dropped by.

She probably did it on a dare and now her buds owe her a bottle of hooch. I've had teen pigeons stick their butts in, poop on my inside windowsill and fly away laughing while their onlooker friends fell about cheering and tossing moult into the air. You got the more adult visit.

Since I know nothing about pigeons, I did a quick dive into search and the consensus appears to be they're a symbol of love and peace and if they come into your life they're a messenger telling you something positive is about to happen that could change your life.

Read into it what you will.

That was my initial feeling as she flew in, like love and peace and hope flew in.

I found an article on why birds mean both life and death to us, a Jungian thing apparently: https://www.academia.edu/5112298/On_The_Relationship_between_Birds_and_Spirits_of_the_Dead
