Suicide Rate by Country 2024
worldpopulationreview.com
Some interesting statistics . seeing as the survey results were recently posted
FYI , I know and FYI there will be people who make it look like an accident too .FYI, some countries have loose laws around causes of deaths, and suicides are often reported as "car accidents" or other things.
no wonder they are always drunkRussia is the top 2. I'm not surprised at all. Imagine waking up and seeing this
I thought we (the uk) would be higher up on that list
We may be soon - you know the old saw about "lies, damned lies and statistics" ? The standard of proof needed for a Coroner to decide that a death is suicide was downgraded earlier this year from the criminal standard (beyond reasonable doubt) to the civil standard of balance of probabilities. That should result in more suicide verdicts.
Call me cynical but the only reason this government does anything is to cut funding and I would not be surprised if the only reason to downgrade it is to save on a murder investigation

But in any event, how have 2019 figures been collated and produced so soon ? I am not too impressed by this survey - take the following as an example. in the section about suicide in Sweden . . . .
First paragraph, "Sweden has a very low suicide rate, but this rate can be misleading because it may not account for physician-assisted suicide, which is legal there."
Third paragraph. "Euthanasia, or physician-assisted suicide, is still illegal in Sweden."
Observe also that UK, at position 78, does not give a total number of suicides.
How can the survey give total numbers of suicides for 2019 with still two months to go ?
Dodgy.

Really? I live in Ireland and I think it is a less family-oriented / communal culture in comparison to british culture, also a more conservative and less diverse place (outside of Dublin city). Our healthcare is worse than the UKs as well - 6 places further down in the Euro Health Consumer Index, but interestingly, dead last for waiting times in the entire EU. So maybe you have access to better medical equipment than Poland but have to wait 20 months on a waiting list in severe pain for it. 20 months is a long time in severe pain.Surprised to see these rates. Also surprised to see Ireland higher than the UK.
I'm in Ireland too! I'm not sure I agree about the less family orientated thing, but I live down the country, not in any if the cities haha.Really? I live in a fairly built up town. Everyone seems like they hate each other and don't want to speak to each other, except for the rare eccentric peeople who you don't generally want to speak with anyway. People are awkward and don't like any forms of unnecessary touch. Hugging and kissing a family member is seen as weird and people don't organically tell each other that they love each other. If I spotted a person in my estate given their relative a huge hug and kiss and saying, "love you" and it looked non-ironic, I'd wonder where I woke up. On the other side of things, I have spent much time on the continent and see the people there are way more obliging and loving with their families. Although this could all be confirmation bias.I'm not sure I agree about the less family orientated thing, but I live down the country, not in any if the cities haha.
What your saying applies in my town also but more with like old school friends that pretend to like you, two faced kinda thing.> I'm not sure I agree about the less family orientated thing

My town is like a cocaine and weed central hub as well (I do neither of these drugs personally).
You need to tap into the upper middle class before you see healthy families, but the middle to lower ones seem completely dysfunctional to me.
One thing I love(d) that seems to be fading out is passing a stranger and giving a nod or saying 'hi'. Not sure how prevalent this is in other countries but it used to be bigger here and I bet it will be gone almost completely within 20 years.
Telling what?This is also telling
"Male suicide rate: 55.9
"Female suicide rate: 9.4"
Telling what?
It's not that Russia is a good place for women, family violence aka wife beating is decriminalized, rape is very common and rarely prosecuted, misogyny is normalized.
Male suicide is so high because of absurdly toxic masculinity culture.
anything, now I don't even know what my neighbour's name is!!!
Such a shame!
Gone are the days of calling into your neighbour and asking for a bowl of sugar cause you've run out haha!Seriously, I am semi-detached. The attached neighbours I've never talked to, they moved in about 6 years ago. The ones on my right I say "hey" and that's it. We have _never_ had a serious conversation. I honestly couldn't even fathom the reaction I'd get if I knocked on a neighboours door and asked for something we were running out of. I think we're truly an awkward bunch of people (myself included). I think people are mostly nice, just not very friendly. And when people are friendly I just queston their intelligence hahah
I liked that pic lol! The kitten and that bird flying by right at same time. Pretty snow scene.Russia is the top 2. I'm not surprised at all. Imagine waking up and seeing this
