They can't understand it because they've never experienced it. I've tried so many times to explain how my brain damage effects me and no one has ever understood. I don't even try anymore. And the suicide hotline is a joke.

It's pretty agitating to see that cursed number plastered onto every page on the internet that involves depression or suicide. I'm glad if it helps others, I truly am, but it's just awful having it shoved down my throat over and over again. I used to call that number every day, sometimes multiple times a day, It doesn't cure torment!

I was told to reach out to them today as well at a regular doctors appointment of all places. I can't even pretend to go along with that anymore.

Yes indeed, I hate the stupid number (now the annoying 3 digit number) being plastered everywhere that is any way hinting at mental health or CTB related stuff. I see in articles talking about people who CTB'd (usually celebrities or news stories of a particular someone who CTB'd).

tried to contact a hotline once over coming out as transgender... took them like an hour to answer (not their fault, probably understaffed with lots of callers n such) and i could pretty much hear the guy googling "how to come out as transgender" even though it was over text >:/

so yeah, i get you, waiting an hour to talk to someone who's going to try find any way to talk you out of ctbing without actually knowing your suitation is far less effective than what whoever keeps putting those hotline numbers down thinks.

Suicide hotlines are completely useless and I hate how the idea of them always gets pushed onto people. Words cannot take away the fact that existence isn't worth enduring, the only real solution to suffering would be to finally accept the right to die and allow people to exit peacefully.

Suicide hotlines come from the idea that a suicidal person has some sort of uncontrollable urge to kill themselves, that comes out of nowhere, from pathological reasons, and they just have to distract you for long enough for it to go away.

I don't know from where that idea came from, but it formed the modus operandi of how the entire society approaches suicide.

And that's exactly why they're so terrible and cringy. They treat you like someone who just needs to be distracted, They don't even try to understand you or your condition, neither they have any means to provide you with any changes

This! It's a okay-ish idea in theory but in praxis you have people that voluntarily listen to thousands, no million of situations without the proper training. I just hate how people put it out there like a bandage on a deep wound.

This 100%. In particular, social media culture combined with mental health activism truly alienates me. It immediately puts me in a worse mood seeing shit like a hotline number underneath a cheap message like #ItIsOkToNotBeOk or "men cry too" or some obvious fucking shit because it makes me realise how truly alone we are as suicidal people. They have no idea. People who post this have felt everyday human emotions like sadness, loneliness, stress, but have never suffered major depressive disorder a day in their life. It's like a litmus test for me to immediately be like, ok, this person has zero sociological skills and understanding of the world they live in. They see mental health inspo like a baby sees jangling keys dangled in front of them, and they think it would have exactly the same effect to everyone who sees their repost. I'm jealous of them, I wish I could zero actual thoughts run through my brain, it sounds bliss. View attachment 4sngzm4nj2b61.jpg.webp

I totally agree. It's so stupid how some people just say, "Call this hotline!" like it will fix everything. The only way it might help is if the person on the other line can offer real solutions and the caller has doubts about suicide being the right decision.

For someone who's more certain about suicide, it definitely won't solve anything, but even if calling the number did help, there's a good chance their solutions would be temporary fixes and nothing more. It would probably end up being a huge let down in the end.

Suicide hotlines are a lot like safety stickers on heavy machinery. By being there they don't help anyone (unless you are an idiot who needs obvious reminders), they are there to legally (or socially) protect the people who put them up there.

At a funeral: Well i gave them the tools they needed to get help! We can't as an institution be held accountable because we posted information on how this was avoidable!

People probably mean well but whenever a big name celebrity commits suicide everyone and their mother are posting that number and it just feels so fake and empty. It's very patronising. Google exists, I know what a hotline number is and where to access one. I've even called one.
