We grew up in London and lived in a flat on the 3rd floor, when I was 10 years old I found a little black and white kitten, it was a lovely cat friendly and always came to me when I was in trouble and comforted me, anyway like every living thing, it was getting old and started having trouble but one day I was approaching the flats and I saw her just leap of the balcony I was shocked it was a long drop that should have killed her but she managed to survive and crawled onto a balcony on the ground floor. I went and collected her and we took her to the vets and the vet said she had a large tumour and will be in pain and die soon so we decided to put her to sleep, yes the peaceful ctb we all dream of, lol.

Here are a few links which also suggest animals ctb but would it stop your plans to ctb if you new your pets will follow you soon.

Cheers

George

Suicide implies that you :

a) understand what death is
c) understand that you, as an individual, can die
d) caused you own death
c) do so while aware that you're doing it

It's a LOT of requirements, i think it'd be pretty hard to determine if any animal can meet every criteria on this list. But not impossible at all, some animal have complex languages and grieving rituals, so that's a pretty interesting topic

Yes I agree but I think my cat new it was dying as the vet found a large tumour and it was old and not eating well so I think it didn't want to die at home in front of us or it tried to commit suicide.

Considering it has always lived in the flat since a kitten and not once did it try to leave or get out.or jump prior to that one time.

I still miss my friend now have some really fond memories.

Animal suicide is a fascinating question... Could it be that animals could engage in suicidal behavior instinctively, without a deep realization of their "mortality"? Like other complex behaviours animals exibit - ants building stuff for example, do they plan ahead? There are better examples. Do they "know" what they are doing?

Not sure if it's true or not, but I have heard that canary birds kill themselves by stabbing themselves with their claws in the neck. They do it when they are in captivity.

Yes other animals are suicidal, it reminds me of the SS Partner Mega Board, haha what a way to ctb.

Nah I don't think my cat would kill himself after my death. He probably will get sad, maybe depressed, because we've been together since he was two months old. But I don't think the poor little guy would end his life because I'm no longer around. He'll eventually get over it.

Here's another article on Animal suicides, so it's not that uncommon, there is a small possibility your dog or cat may ctb after you have.

I suspect that many higher mammals have more complex emotions and more abstract thoughts than we like to admit.
They may not have the same concepts of death as we do, but the need to make suffering end is probably universal.
And those mammals do tend to recognise death. That behaviour has been seen in all sorts of animals including cats, dogs, primates and elephants.

Referring to the claim that animals are not aware of the existence of death.
How would you feel in their skin ? Depressed but persuaded that life has no end. *evil*

I have found another four short video's on suicidal animals the first one you can forward to the 2.00 minute mark but I am finding them interesting not good to be a male in the insect world, the male ants after mating with the queen there genitals explode inside them OMG and spiders go to there death after mating knowing they will be a tasty meal.

The next video is dolphin and whales seem to commit mass suicide.

The intelligence of dolphins, they are intelligent mammals so I think there is proof that animals commit suicide, I have found this subject interesting

The last one shows how similar animals are to humans

AFAIK some animals may become depressed due to things like their owner dying and stop eating and die from starvation. I've read a few things online about animals doing things that result in their immediate death like being hunted and jumping off a cliff to escape. I doubt they have a concept of their lives ending and what death is but they certainly feel fear, pain and I think can become depressed. It's obvious when an animal is happy ie a dog wags its tail, a cat purrs, so it's makes sense they can be sad also.

I've heard of animals dying of broken  it's understandable as animals are closer than your family.

I didn't read the articles, and I don't think it's likely that your pet will CTB after you do, it depends on how attached you are and how old they are. I don't think animals know what suicide is, BUT they do self harm and self mutilate by biting, clawing themselves, which can lead to death. They do it as a reaction to something else painful, and I do believe that animals suffer from past trauma. I'm not sure about the part where your own pet will CTB after you CTB, but I do believe animals do feel insufferable pain and harm themselves, just like humans. I don't think suicide or suicidal thoughts is a mental illness, it could be a symptom, but it in itself is not a mental illness in my opinion. It's a natural response I think, but I'm no scientist or doctor. Maybe your cat was in so much pain and was disoriented, lost it's balance perhaps? Or it could have been trying to self harm, cats do self harm as well. It's sad that I've had 2 pets who have self harmed, my hedgehog who cuts himself until he bleeds with his nails, and my cat who licks his furr completely off his hind legs, both of them are rescues and suffered a lot of trauma before I rescued them, so it's understandable, I am putting off CTB because of them.

Well that's why the articles are attached so you can read about the animals that decided to ctb. My cat jumped to end it's life.
