just as an information. a european news magazine wrote an article today about a man ("in crisis", i think thats the word for suicide in the media language) that survived falling down from the Horseshoe Falls at the niagara falls. the magazine says that this is unusual (to survive ). hight 57 meters. in my opinion never jump from less than 100 but well....

Dang. I would not want to survive that. Wonder what they mean by "survived".

It's over water, which increases the chance of survival.

For what it's worth, Robert Hines is perfectly capable of moving around nowadays. Even the guy who survived a 47 story fall onto land made an almost complete recovery. (He can walk and even run slowly, but can't run as fast as he used to.)

Well he wasn't the first to survive Niagara. Its not really the height of the waterfalls thats the problem its the churring meat grinder at the bottom that will kill you. People who survive are usually just flukes of fate

It tells you that you're not intelligent enough to kill yourself.
That may of course also mean that the reasons you were thinking you had for attempting to kill yourself, were ridiculous in the first place.

People who go down Niagra in a barrel survive about half of the time. However, there's a pretty big difference between going over in a barrel and going over without protection.

I meant those without a barrel, at least 3 for sure have done it

The news here stated that the only reason he survived was the unusually high water levels: the river was flowing so fast that it launched the guy out beyond the boulders at the bottom that would ordinarily have pulverized him. No way he would even have known to plan for that --personally, I would have thought that more water would be a good thing. And even had he foreseen that possibility, where do you even check to find the water flow over the falls, and how do you calculate whether it's too great to allow you to hit the rocks?

Statistically, it was a reasonably reliable method, but this just goes to show that even the most reliable methods can fail.

But if you aren't convinced "it isn't your time yet" after a ride like that, there's nothing that'll convince you.

With that said, I believe Niagara Falls would be off of my locations to CTB then. Not only would it be too famous and well known of an place (likely also guarded by suicide prevention patrols and what not), it is also not as reliable as before. The exception to this would be if I was already extremely desperate (like having no other reilable methods) and happen to be within the vicinity or closest to where I am then. However, I highly doubt I'd end up in such a situation to begin with as I still have my method and am I able to check out on a whim.

From that article:

"Kirk Jones became the only known person to survive a jump over the falls without a barrel or flotation device in 2003. Since then two more people survived going over the falls without aid but these identities have not been released since they were likely suicide attempts."

That looks statistically pretty darn good, if you're attempting to CTB.
