I heard somewhere that a failed SN suicide attempt can leave your skin discolored. Is this true?

This article talks about nitrite poisoning...

Short response: Yes

Long response: Sodium nitrite induces methemoglobinemia. Your hemogloblin cannot effectively carry oxygen to tissues because there is a high percent of methemoglobin. This results in cyanosis of the skin. Your skin pigment will not be permanently blue-ish grey. With treatment or time it will go away on its own. It is extremely unlikely that a sodium nitrite poisoning would permanently discolor your skin.

How do you know the chances are extremely unlikely? I am considering this method over my previous method which was hanging. So I want to know what I'm getting into. I just feel like people over hype SN on this site, and I'm wondering if the SN method can have serious negative effects.

I can't promise it never has serious negative effects other than death but it's my understanding that the skin discolouration isn't permanent. People here who have tried to kill themselves with SN have said they looked bluish for 10 or so hours.

I won't pinpoint exact threads for you. That is something that you need to do on your own time. Spoonfeeding information is the least productive way because it'll only assist in someone skimming over threads without taking in the whole picture. Sodium nitrite is quite an effective and reliable way of self-deliverance. There are known symptoms, and some symptoms you may not get. There are also witness accounts on here of people getting caught in the act or while passed out. Granted I believe some users fabricate stories on here, perhaps for the lack of acknowledgement they receive, or look for compliments on there writing. You'll need to use your intuition if it's merely a fictional thread or someone who actually went through with it. Believe me, there are actual genuine attempts from users on here that make sense logically. Others not so much.

Sodium nitrite is hyped because it's accessible, not under many restrictions, and our understanding of what sodium nitrite intoxication does to the body is quite understood. It is well understood that high levels of methemoglobin in the blood will produce a death that is not traumatic. Survival instinct has the chance to happen, of course. It takes 10 to 15 minutes before you start drifting away from self-poisoning.
