New consciousness happens all the time with births. New critters becoming their own things, babies growing into little people.

But our own consciousness? The ones that make us us? I think this is it. It's attached to our brains and bodies and experiences. Once the lights go out, I don't think there's any coming back. I think that's it. Probably won't even realize we're gone

Oh my god. What a curse this all was. The only comfort is instant indifference due to not existing.

Birth and Death
First off, "you" were already "dead" (non-existent) before you were alive. "You" didn't exist, then "You" came to exist, despite previous non-existence. So after death, "you" simply transition back into the same state of non-existence that you were in before you were born. Which means you can come to exist again as it's already been proven to happen and would inevitably happen again because anything that CAN happen will happen given enough time.
I think the fact that we didn't exists and then suddenly came into being, is proof in itself that it could happen again after death. I think our ego, or who we are dies yes and that's forever. But whatever all living beings are it is the same thing. As long as there are living beings in the universe we are never really dead.

But we exist because our parents did and their parents and so on. For us to come back, they have to as well right?

exactly
Each sperm and egg carry a unique set of genetic material. When a sperm fertilizes an egg, the resulting zygote has a specific genetic combination from that particular sperm and egg.
If a different sperm had fertilized the egg, the genetic contribution from that sperm would be different. This would alter the genetic makeup of the resulting embryo. The combination of genes, including those affecting physical traits, personality, and predispositions, would be different.
The embryo that develops from this new combination of genetic material would not be the same individual as the one resulting from the original sperm and egg. It would be a different individual with its own unique set of traits and characteristics.
The specific combination of genes that created you is unique to the sperm and egg that did meet. If a different sperm had succeeded, it would have resulted in a different individual, not "you."

I don't believe in such, I just believe death to be the absence of everything where all is gone and forgotten, I believe that once one ceases to exist that is it for them, they are gone. All I personally hope for is to permanently lose consciousness and never suffer ever again, non-existence is all I could ever personally see as desirable no matter what.

NDEs are suggestive of a continued consciousness, but most here believe they are hallucination. There are also children who claim to remember past lives. Imo the studies are convincing but there is no guarantee.

My belief is that you live, you die, and that's it. Your entire being seems from your brain. That's why changes in the brain due to things, such as stroke or TBIs, can end up not just changing our outward perception (object recognition, colour perception, etc), but also may lead to changes in things like personality. Once you are dead, that is it. You only get one shot at life.

No, it can't happen again imo. "You" exist due to the specific arrangement of atoms that have caused your consciousness to be made and with this consciousness comes self awareness. Once you die, the atoms that make up you will still exist of course but it'd never be in this specific arrangement ever again for all of eternity meaning that, once you die, that's it

Really makes no sense right. All we are is a complex arrangement of atoms. But where did the "I" come from. You arrange atoms a certain way - you get life, but what decides that's it's my consciousness versus your consciousness. I don't really get it, I guess science can't even answer that.

Also I'll add that even if "you" came about again. Would it really be "you"?

For all intents and purposes, it's another human entirely. Just like me and you are both experiencing consciousness right now - but we are clearly not the same person.

I don't really know the answer to that either.

This is precisely why reincarnation doesn't scare me (not that I believe in it anyway) as I don't think that "me" in my next life can be considered to be "me" right now. I always felt like that was a false equivalence to make. I personally think as to what makes "me" me is my consciousness interacting with my environmental conditions. I'd be an entirely different person if I was born in a different family, had different genetics, had a different upbringing, had different memories and so on.
For all intents and purposes, it's another human entirely. Just like me and you are both experiencing consciousness right now - but we are clearly not the same person.
Yeah, exactly.

I personally find it hard to believe that after-death is nonexistence. It is certainly a possibility, but keep in mind that some sort of after life is also possible. The truth is no one truly knows for sure. I would consider and accept both possible outcomes if I were you.

If reincarnation is true then ya you could come back but you would be a totally different person

I don't believe in reincarnation in the direct sense but what gives me a little hope I'll still be a part of this world is my atoms when I die will spread and transfer to new existing beings. Probably thousands or millions. So we all will live on in one way or another.

1. Infinite Universes
If space-time goes on forever, then it must start repeating at some point, because there are a finite number of ways particles can be arranged in space and time. So if you look far enough, you would encounter another version of you— in fact, infinite versions of you. Some of these twins will be doing exactly what you're doing right now, while others will have worn a different sweater this morning, and still others will have made vastly different career and life choices. Because the observable universe extends only as far as light has had a chance to get in the 13.7 billion years since the Big Bang, the space-time beyond that distance can be considered to be its own separate universe. In this way, a multitude of universes exists next to each other in a giant patchwork quilt of universes.
