The conventional wisdom seems to be that people are afraid of failing. But how many of you are really more afraid of succeeding?

Failure and then ending up either extremely crippled to the point that i can't attempt to ctb, or in a psych ward for months while my disease progresses even further from the forced medication.

or, you know, both.

i'm actually really looking forward to either the afterlife or simply my consciousness vanishing into nothing. either outcome seems way better than this joke of a life.

Cliche but staying alive after my attempt and ending up worse is the biggest fear. Well that and dying seems scary, but being dead sounds magnificent

I'm afraid of Nothing. I can't wrap my head around not existing at all. Not seeing, hearing or anything anymore. No consciousness. Just...nothing.

I suppose it's like trying to remember before you were born, but still it scares me. How do you overcome that fear of Nothing?

I think about this a lot too. Of course on answer to this line of concern is that we'll die someday, and it can't be avoided. But I think about how I can't imagine not being. All my life I've been conscious. You can't really even think of it like going to sleep because of dreaming, and when you go to sleep you do so thinking you're going to wake up. I've used the whole argument about what we were...or weren't...before being born when arguing with a Christian about how you can't just go nowhere after you dies. I argued, "what do you remember about before you were born?" So it makes sense to me. But it's still hard to imagine. I guess the one point is that it's only something you have to wrestle with while alive. Dead it won't matter. I hope.

Nothing. Finally. Took me a long time to reach this point but nothing anymore.. I'd love to be a jumper. Specifically off the golden gate bridge but I need a lot of drugs to do that. And alcohol too. That's my true dream. Just afraid of heights and I can't stand there for hours at my second choice bridge (Coronado) prepping myself for the jump like I might be able to do at the ggb. But gosh almighty, that feeling would be glorious. Falling through the air knowing I'm about to hit. Unfortunately, at the Coronado, it's a park and jump or get arrested type of deal. Wish I could be like all those other people who just leap instantly

It's the fear of the unknown I guess most of us have. I guess when you die "naturally" you aren't really expecting to die, so you don't have the same feelings.
I don't really think there is anything to fear about dying. We simply go back to where we were before we were born. I often think of all the significant dates in history and wonder where I was. The universe is millions of years old. Our lives are a mere fleeting moment in time compared.

Yes, in fact, the universe is billions of years old. Our lives are but a blip. And yet, it seems so meaningful to us. But in the bigger picture it is nothing. Truly nothing. So what to make of that? I don't know.

Perhaps it is like having a child. There are billions of children but the only one that means anything is yours.

The universe was here long before we were here and will be long after. Regardless if you choose to ctb or die "naturally". So nobody should really fear what's to come.

i have a way of avoiding the fear of my consciousness dying and vanishing into nothing.

even if by some miracle my life turns around and i get to have a life woth living and then die by natural causes, it is still inevitable, so why worry about something that we can't change?
and if we take it to the extreme, every single living being that exists will have the same fate, we are attached to our existance only because of small chemical reactions, the same ones that tell us to kill ourselves and the same ones that make our consciousness feel so meaningful, in the end it is just borrowed time.

I'm a little afraid of succeeding … not being sure of what really comes next. Also afraid for family members after I'm gone.
I think I'm still more afraid of failing and being worse off than I am now.
:'( :'(
1- Failure and injury.
2- Potential afterlife.
3- Possible missed turnaround.

I'm only afraid of 1 & 2 :'( #3 Isn't going to happen so I'm not concerned at all.
I think this is true of me too. I'm afraid of both. I'm not sure why I'm afraid of dying, but I guess it's the ultimate FOMO.

The ultimate for me would be JOMO !!! :smiling:

I'm truly afraid of failing. It's what's kept me from throwing myself off my balcony for years. Who knows who would hear it and rush my deformed splatter to the hospital like the sick fucking pro-lifers they are. I have SN now and am just waiting for a good time to do it. With little to no permanent effects, there's little to be scared of.

I'm afraid to suffer even more, because life has a lot of imagination in terms of suffering.
Henri-Georges Clouzot, a past french director, used to say that god is a sadist.
Because if god was love, then the world would only be love. And if god was a sadist,
he would give you happiness, and then would take it back by bringing you pain.

I've never been afraid of being dead - even before I was suicidal. (Since I don't believe anything comes after death, so nothing to fear)

I have always feared the actual process of dying, though...whether from some disease, old age or any other way of dying. I would much rather die on my own terms, though, rather than living to an old age and slowly dying as a vegetable.

And the fear of failing is even worse than the fear of the process of dying.

The fear of the unknown. That includes both living and dying if I actually kill my fucking self. Life has taken an unprecedented downhill since November 2018 and its only spiraling the fuck out of my hands. Day number 296 to be precise. My life has become a fucking laboratory experiment for the universe. I pacing myself to sleep by saying that I'm gonna pass away in my sleep tonight and I wake up in the morning and say to myself I'll die in an accident while driving to work today. But guess what, it's gonna be Day 297 tomorrow and fucking nothing would change. Were we only put on this earth to suffer the fuck out of our lives? Isn't there an end to it? Sorry about the rant.

I'm nervous about what is on the other side (if anything).
