tl;dr a lifetime appointment was made to the supreme court, 8 days before the national election. this comes after an appointment was heavily contested in 2016, because there were 200some days till the national election.
a lot of people, including myself, are extremely angry and scared.

The supreme court essentially sets the precedent for all the laws of the land to follow. This is particularly important for social issues such as abortion, gay marriage and historically black civil rights. Those that sit on the supreme court are there for life. The political composition of the supreme court is important when voting for these issues. The Republican party has a majority in the Senate which means that they can essentially force through any candidate that they want and they did so for the past 2 seats. The recent appointee is very inexperienced and has some strange, conservative ideas about the US constitution and society as a whole. She's not qualified for the job, basically and the Supreme Court is now a weighted majority in favour of conservative policies.

Long story short, the Supreme Court now has some people that are not qualified to be there and worse yet, they can essentially play whack-a-mole with any social issues that happen to bubble up to them. Realistically not much will change in the day-to-day, but it does put the US way behind in socially progressive issues compared to the main economies of Europe. This shouldn't really come as any surprise to folks though, given that a reality TV star is now literally president of the country. I think it's important to highlight that fact when I get an opportunity; I think people have forgotten because of all the crazy stuff that has been said and done over the past couple of years.

It's pretty hard for the supreme court to move things backwards on abortion, more likely is that things won't move toward greater access to it than already exists. I'm not a fan of either side - imo it's a one party system pretending to be a two party system - but it does seem like the reality tv star has at least been less of a warmonger than the dems would be, so to the extent that I care at all I hope that ridiculous guy wins again.

This. The judges refuse to take on social issues anyway so things like abortion are still safe. I would dread if abortion was outlawed. It's just propaganda that's all. The mainstream media is all about the $$$ and they'll get it by any means. People really aught to stop putting their faith in such unscrupulous people.

I was reeling from the gut-wrenching news that they outlawed abortion in Poland, when this happened...

At the same time the Pope is endorsing same sex marriage, so maybe there is some weird balancing going on.

Who the eff thought they could outlaw abortions in a EU country in 2020? It's mind-blowing. I can't wait for the day a new Pope will get a sudden wake up call and state abortion are every woman's right.

I voted today. My county is mostly a blue county, so didn't matter who chose who. I did a write in: Meteor
