I never understood why people take American politics so emotionally, maybe I am just uninformed.

I'll do my best to explain:
Before RBG died, there were 5 conservative justices to 4 liberal supreme court justices, and one of the conservative justices was on the more liberal side. RBG was the most influential supreme court justice in acts such as LGBTQ+ rights and Roe v. Wade (which allows rights for pregnant women and rights to contraceptives and birth control, and also sex ed being taught in school). If a conservative supreme court judge is put in place, as likely will be by Trump, there will be 6 conservative justices to 3 liberal ones, so the likelihood of civil rights acts, women's rights acts, lgbtq rights acts, etc being passed is extremely low. I fear for my rights and for the rights of my fellow Americans.

Do you think that your rights depend on RBG being there or on some kind of democrat-republican balancing act in the supreme court?

What about things like the patriot act, involuntary commitment i.e. using psychiatry as a tool of political control (e.g. the baker act or the 5150 hold), governments spying on citizens via computers, phones and social media, lack of subsidized universal healthcare, profit-driven multinationals having so much leverage and lobbying power in congress, etc.
RBG being there or not won't change a thing. Democrat or republican won't change a thing apart from marginal concerns.
Politics is a farce, and the public only has as much power as its allowed to have, which is to say zero, for all intents and purposes.

edit: sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm attacking you or anything, that's just what I think.

In some ways, I think you're right that things have always been shitty and those things won't change. The things I'm worried about are things like abortion laws. This is because I'm states with stricter abortion laws, women actually get sent to jail for murder if they have a miscarriage or stillbirth, as it is assumed that they did this on purpose. This is just terrifying, and without RBG, laws like this can become stronger and more prevalent on a federal level

Thanks for explaining it. I've seen her death all over Facebook but was too embarrassed to ask or google

That's pretty terrible. We're away told that america is this bastion of freedom and liberty, but the truth isn't consistent with what we're told.

Ok, you won't get jailed for saying anything because of the first amendment, and it's easy to acquire guns (not because those in power are concerned with some sacred 'right to bear arms' for ordinary citizens, but rather because it's beneficial to gun manufacturers and sellers, and therefore economically sound policy). But what's the flipside of this freedom?

Practically no welfare state, most laws are passed based on how they affect the very richest or corporations, mainstream media is saturated with political propaganda, infrastructure and public transport systems are inferior (most scandinavian countries are a lot better in this respect), and higher education is costly and results in massive debt.
Nearly every aspect of america, legal, political and social, is about money and profit (I'm not saying it's much better anywhere else, in fact life is considerably worse in some places, but I'm just considering america here), and 'rights' are just there as short change to assuage the masses.

Exaggeration much? You're being overly dramatic.

I won't miss her, not even a little bit.

She is truly a pioneer and blazed several trails for women. But I can't help but feel a little disappointed in her for not retiring when Obama had a chance to replace her. Still a tough loss for the USA...
