I'm going to start off by saying that I think Reddit could be an absolutely amazing resource for people. The last shreds of what I would consider to be "free speech" on the internet existed there when it first started, and there were communities for every conceivable subject.

But everything took a nosedive when controversial communities started getting too much attention (r/fatpeoplehate, r/sanctionedsuicide, r/The_Donald, etc.) and Reddit started cracking down on everything.

I have 3 Reddit accounts. In an ideal world, I'd only have one because that's all I need. But I had to make a 2nd account because my main account kept getting banned in communities I liked to participate in. I used to be really active on the r/antiwork and r/latestagecapitalism subreddits, but I was forced out for wrongthink during the 2016 election because the political discourse was reaching insane levels. I wasn't even going to those subreddits to discuss politics, but one tiny comment was all it took for trigger-happy mods to ban one of their most active members. I loved that place, and I would still contribute if I could. I even appealed a few times, but I would always get dismissive responses from power-hungry mods who would just reply "no lol" when I asked politely.

I also used r/ForeverAlone and r/depression fairly regularly to cope with my feelings, but even those places aren't safe. I forget what I got banned for there, but I had to create a 3rd Reddit account to start participating again. I was walking on eggshells this time, being as careful as I possibly could to be an upstanding member of those communities (because I needed them; I still do), but somehow they were able to detect that I was using an alt-account and I got shawdowbanned.

I don't consider myself to be a bad person, and I don't deserve to get exiled from communities like these. They were made for people like me (referring to the depression, anxiety, and mental illness subreddits), and mods are putting people's mental health in jeopardy when they silence them as regularly as they do. And then the people who aren't banned in those communities start walking on eggshells too when they speak, so even they won't get the support they truly need because of how militant the mods and site-wide rules are.

I hate Reddit because of how much potential it has (or had, I should say). I don't feel comfortable participating in any community on there at this point, because I'll probably end up accidentally breaking some stupid rule on the list of 500 rules they have in the sidebar.

No doing this and that. Maybe by exclusion, we can reach a conclusion /r depression is suitable for somebody who stubbed their toe. SuicideWatch is more permissible from what I remember. Reddit is the bastion of censorship and it's more obvious than ever how biased their owners are.

I don't know if Saidit is a good alternative, maybe it is.

Yeah one of the key problems with society is that we're all being forced into homogenous thinking, and nowhere is that more evident to me than Reddit. I realized quite early on in life that I'm a little different to virtually everyone and that I'm never going to be comfortable as part of a hivemind, so when I browse the site I just feel irritated by the responses. It's like they're 50% boring, 30% woke, 10% smarmy and 10% quirky. It's like everything, it's just formulaic and trite.

By virtue of population growth alone we should be becoming more diverse, but we're not. Instead we're being taught that diversity comes from people who look different, but that we must all think the same. It's really worrying.

Reddit shifted away from its original purpose, which Arron Swartz was a strong advocate for regarding freedom of information after his Infogami merged with Reddit he subsequently obtained co-founder status. Swartz fought against Reddit adopting a traditional corporate model, but to his regret, the two other co-founders sold Reddit to Conde Nast Publications. After Swartz's suicide, Reddit rapidly started losing the identity associated with Swartz's effort and transitioning to a corporate mentality.

For those who do not know, Conde Nast Publications is owned by Advance Publications, which has a familial ownership. The Newhouse family is one of the richest and most powerful families in the world and they use their vast network of media companies to shape society to their whims. They're intergenerational billionaire oligarchs who no one voted for that control society's opinions, they effectively undermine democracy. Reddit is one of their major propaganda hubs to distribute forced opinions to serve their own selfish interests while turning society against itself. They disrupt collective action against the wealthy and encourage collective action efforts for poor-vs-poor.

As a result, all the major subreddits push similar messages. The smaller niche subs still have their merit and utility.

You will also see similar messages pushed:

Also, keep in mind people like the Newhouses only hang out with other wealthy people, so it's likely that they collude with other media owners to hone and harmonize their message. This explains why you often see the same title or similar body of text pushing the same message accross a variety of publications, it increases the messages credibility in appearance--but, not really, because this methodology is a fallacy exploiting human cognitive frailties. This behavior should be regulated, but good luck when they can out-donate an entire nation of people and their opinions will always matter more to politicians accepting bribes.

Reddit mods actively work to overpower the actual site owners by piling onto communities and users that they do not like. This isn't conjecture, their Discord logs were leaked when they were bullying r/nonewnormal off the site. You can 100% consider Reddit to be completely pozzed.

Yep, it's a compromised platform for sure. For example, when Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested, all of asudden one of the most powerful "powermods" on reddit stopped posting, MaxwellHill. I think most people know her background at this point, but it demonstrates the type of people who are obsessed with control. Special interests groups and intelligence agencies have a field day on the site I imagine.

Reddit is only useful or representative on the smaller subreddits.

Yea, it's one of the worst platforms out there in my opinion. Nothing but echo chambers. Horrible place to try to have a discussion.

Not gonna lie, the moment that most powermods and the new staff they were hiring showed their true colors, aka pro-pedophilia and pro-communism, was the moment I stopped using the platform.

I mean, it was abundantly clear that they were pro censorship since around 2014, but these disgusting and authoritarian revelations are just too much. The fact that they turned a blind eye to AHS spamming CP to get certain subreddits banned is beyond ridiculous.
