I recently discovered Sally Face through watching a YouTuber play it in my free time. The game is amazing and unique, with a dark narrative and surreal elements.
Without diving into spoiler territory, there is definitely a theme of mental health and Sal's identity which are certainly central to the storytelling. Sal, who is the protagonist, also has a lot go complex emotions and mirror the struggles many people, myself included, face in dealing with personal trauma and a sense of self worth.
One of the most prominent motifs in Sally Face is the use of masks. Sal, who wears a prosthetic face mask due to an injury as a child, seems to embody the idea of wearing a metaphorical mask to hide parts of himself, both physically and emotionally. This can be further examined through certain quotes throughout the game. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for how some people feel the need to hide their true emotions and feelings from the rest of the world, masking their struggled with depression, anxiety, or otherwise in an attempt to fit in. The mask can also show how some people feel a disconnect from their own identity and aren't able to fully express themselves out of fear.
Obviously, the game is about much more than this and has many paranormal messages, but I love how it seems to sort of touch on the taboo topic of mental health, and so I decided to post here. If anyone here hasn't seen or heard of it, I highly recommend it!
