Here are some annoying, yet common pro-life sentiments espoused by anti-suicide and suicide preventionists.
Suicide Preventionist: "He/she should have asked for help!"
Rebuttal: If you mean asking for help as in the patient coming forward about their suicidality, suicide plans, suicide ideation, well you couldn't be further from the truth. Do you think that threatening to hospitalize suicidal people, force treatment against them, treat them worse than a criminal, slap negative labels and stigmatize them, and more other mistreatments... would help? Oh but there's more! Then when or if the patient is discharged, he/she receives a huge medical bill for the (shitty) treatment that was forced upon the patient, who did not agree to it. If the patient isn't able to pay for it or doesn't pay for it, his/her credit score will be ruined, his/her wages garnished, property seized to pay off debt, etc.. Also, don't forget that depending on circumstances, the patient's social life would be wrecked (word does get out, confidentiality is just a formality and a joke but that's another topic for another time) and possibly even out of a job, yet somehow has to appreciate this subhuman treatment, violation of due process, civil liberties, and somehow come up with enough money to pay off a debt that should not have incurred upon said person.
Fuck these people who think it's ok to put another human being through all of that! The statement "there is a special place in hell" would be really fitting for these people. (I don't believe in an afterlife as I'm an atheist but I do like that one statement nevertheless)
Suicide Preventionist: "No one is forcing you to live! You have a choice!"
Rebuttal: Really? A choice? Or do you mean the illusion of a choice? Ok, how about you try talking about wanting to end your life, wanting to die and escape this prison on Earth and see how quickly you will be silenced, threatened with forced treatment, detained against your will, treated like a criminal, and have little to no rights. I think you will eat your own words.
Suicide Preventionist: "It's society's fault for stigmatization of mental illness. They don't understand it. We are working on destigmatizing it and raising awareness, etc. (insert arbitrary bullshit lines)"
Rebuttal: The last I've checked, society is being indoctrinated to believe that mental illness is bad and in fact, YOU people are the ones who make it difficult and perpetuate this notion of stigma and then decide to kick around the hot potato between society, government, healthcare, and even religion to some degree. You don't want to own up to your faults and instead feign ignorance when confronted and deflect, shift, lie, deceive people so that it doesn't sound bad. You are part of the problem, not a part of the solution. If you want people to really open up and reduce stigma, then you must do away with involuntary detainment, treatment, and stop treating people who haven't committed any crimes like criminals. Also, stop trying to label normal reactions to horrible situations as diseases when they are clearly natural responses to the shitty circumstances around the world!
I thought I'd vent off some of these common banalities espoused by pro-lifers, and most of the people around the world. These are just some of my responses that I would have against people who say these things. Granted, I would not want to confront them nor put myself in any situation like that. Things can easily escalate and get ugly quickly and I'd find myself in a bad bad situation on a whim. Therefore, I'm just posting what I'd like to say to these "people" if I could get away with it, without repercussions.
