I have no one to talk to about the things I like because either they aren't familiar with them or they don't care. I know many people are familiar with how much this sucks, so I wanna hear about the things that you guys enjoy. A game, a song, a show, a book, some random obscure topic you found on Wikipedia at 3am that you find interesting and can't get out if your head, anything. I wanna hear about it. My dms are open too if you wanna talk there.

Spoilers for the System Shock remake:

As much as I dislike the final bossfight, when I was riding down the platform to get to the arena I had a huge stupid grin on my face as it loaded and I realized it was a little reference to the manual art/Japanese box art for the 1994 original. (See boss arena here)

But in general the remake is phenomenal. It's one of the few things that's given me joy recently because the 1994 game is my favourite game of all time (specifically the floppy disk version). It's an absolute love letter to the original in every way and sticks to the "hard 90s shooter" thing in 2023 which is breath of fresh air (at least for me).

I love the way they did all the enemy models and how most of them are recognizable as their original sprite counterparts (outside of the cyborg warrior but that model change was for the better.) Plus all the little changes to enemy behavior that makes them more dangerous than before, e.g, the Cortex Reaver can deal a bunch of damage now because they can fire grenades at you, on top of them being way faster then you are. They also did this for the weapon models too, and they also act like how you'd expect them to. A railgun for example shoots a strong projectile that pierces through enemies instead of what it did in the 1994 game of being a weird rocket launcher.

The music is also something that is fantastic and I'm so glad that I gave a chance. I was so worried after playing the demo that it'd be too ambient, that it would just take a backseat unlike the original with it's (albeit, a bit strange) tracks that are very high energy but it fits with the "desolate space station in 2072" vibe. The tracks in the remake are split into 2 states for everywhere (except cyberspace) 'explore' and 'combat' (with a few inbetween tracks that bridge the two called bits "escalation"). The explore tracks remain ambient but they most definitely stick out, but so do the combat tracks, they remained electronic and high energy in the best way. But back to the exploration tracks, they create tension, which is what I think a lot of ambient tracks should subtly do, other than setting the tone for where you are (See: Burgeoning Empire of Steel and Opulence and Ostentation). One of my favourite tracks being an explore track, "Cardinal Transmissions". Final thing about the music, the names are also cool and fit with the theme as well, I won't link them like the ones above, but "Throne Room of a God", "Face Your Executioner", and "Prophet Through Synthesis" are just a few examples.

There are also just so many little details that are references from the 1994 game that made me smile like a doofus that I won't get into because I am over 500 words at this point.

Hear me out,

Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in my heart. He's not just the usual blondie video game character to me; he represents resilience, bravery, and determination. Like seriously, he's the ultimate baddass. Spiky blond hair, dreamy blue eyes, legendary huge buster sword - total gaming icon..! >///< From a silly mercenary to a first class soldier, he'a got it all. Cloud has stolen my heart and taken it to midgar and back. x #goat

And sorry I'm not done yet. Can we talk about Akechi, from persona 5? He's like legit a prince straight out of a fairy tale. The way he navigates the line between justice and vengeance is so intriguing, and just seeing his interactions with joker is just chef's kiss, really. Seeing them both have different perceptions on justice, and fighting for it is not boring at all.. Him pursuing what he perceives as true justice & the way he questions the flaws within society & seeks to make a difference in his own way is something I greatly admire. xoxo #goals #Rawr Thx for reading my mini fan moment..

And you @Navy , tell me about something you truly admire ^^

Ahhhhh I've been having mini fan moments with Nier from Nier Replicant. Sure after act 2 he may seem more vengeful but can you blame him??? Bro lost his sister the only person he would give the world to. He did so many things for her and he's such a flawed protagonist but for some reason that makes him feel more real to me?? I just really enjoy his character sm and I just love the Nier series in general like the music oh my god. "Shadowlord" has me in a death grip and so does "Song of the Ancients -Fate". I could go on forever on how good they sound musically and just ramble on and on about how well it goes with the story and how emotional they sound but I literally wouldn't be able to stop. Nier automata is good too but for some reason Nier Replicant just hits so different for me.

That's my tiny rant lmao hope you enjoyed. Reading yours also made me feel glad I made this thread, I could feel your excitement through the screen

Thank you for linking the tracks!! I'm definitely gonna look more into this. I've been listening to prophet through synthesis, I could definitely see myself listening to it at night or maybe in a car ride just to vibe. A weird example but I just really like the ambience along with ambience tracks so your recommendations were really good! Thank you so much for sharing! Honestly, if you haven't listened to it all already, the full OST (youtube link) is really good and sounds like it'd be right up your alley.

Side recommendation, I think you would enjoy the System Shock 2 soundtrack, it's a mix of ambient tracks and weird 90's techno. I can't stress enough how good some of the ambient tracks are (See: Med Sci 2, Hydro 2, and Rec), but in game the techno tracks are a bit of a punch to the face when you don't expect them/are playing the game for the first time (See: Ops 2, Engineering, and my personal favourite, Command 2).

If you listened to System Shock 1's music and are wondering why SS2 sounds so different, that's because it's being assembled on the spot by your sound card (or the program Virtual Midi Synth if you're playing on modern hardware) and the track would change based off of what's happening around you in game, which I think is extremely cool with how many different scenarios and triggers there are!! For example if there is a dangerous enemy around (e.g, a Cortex Reaver) it will make some notes off key and move them around on the midi reel so it sounds off, it will also do this depending on how angry SHODAN is with the player. Or with robotic enemies it will add a strange wailing to the track (can be sort of heard here). But because of these additions to the midi reel, it sounds really weird when you record the music in game and listen to it that way, because it wasn't meant to BE exported that way, but nobody really noticed the intricacies or appreciated it so it wasn't brought back for SS2.

I didn't think that music being assembled by your hardware was possible. Seems like a lot of care was put into this game. Also yes I have been listening to some of the ost! I really like Ethical Constraints Removed. I was drawing a bit today and it was nice to have in the background. I'll be sure to check out SS2.

Let me tell you something, "m1v", this anime "thing" is nothing. He's literally just a 'I think I'm Zack' clone.

Phew, I didn't think I'd rant today.

I'm not done:
There's a lot of reasons why I do not like Weather Strife, first minor reason being: what the hell is their fixation on characters named after weather? Cloud, Lightning, Snow, Rain.

I just do not get Cloud's character. Like I get it, you looked up to Zack, you strived to be like him, etc. or Sephiroth at a time, a dream be a soldier etc.
Maybe it's because I'm not too fond of the whole anime aesthetic and such, emo-type personality, Lightning was the same way for me; she's regarded as a female Cloud.
Sure, Final Kismet is a hybrid of Western and Japanese RPG style that follows the beats of a classic final fantasy game, but when it comes down to character specifically for the ones I worked on—I don't know, I guess I shouldn't compare FK's character to FF7, since every character has their own growth and depth.
But, I've always feared I might get the whole 'he's a western Cloud' remark, similarity how players did Lightning when FF13 came out, because he's not in actuality. Sure both Ryutai and Cloud share the same physical aesthetic, fighting style, but; going back in time, yes, I had my inspirations, but that's where it ended—I wanted my own "Cloud" to put into better words for understanding, but with his own goals, background, troubles, tribulations, obstacles, struggles to face—experience, learn, grow.

I'm not saying Cloud makes a cameo appearance under a very striking resemblance in FK, but, if he did, I don't want him to feel like Ryutai's there to compete with Cloud, given that one specific event in the game, shows others in all honestly. But yes, I do get a bit riled up whenever I see or hear about Cloud or FF7 in general, because of this conflict.

I do not need to say that Cloud is the only character who shows or embodies what it means to be resilient, headstrong, or steadfastly loyal to his comrades, OK.
A lot of players get too wrapped up in FF7, Cloud in particular, and become almost blind to the fact other characters from other games have already done what Cloud's done; shown those exact traits, in their own way. Those holding a bias and hate towards another for this reason alone is what also peels my skin.

Let's just say, this is a very touchy subject that genuinely gets my blood boiling. I was just lucky to have had my teammates are there to keep it and myself leveled. They were the reason that event and battle in FK afterwards remained cordial, because if it was solely up to me, I'd absolutely have Ryutai beat the absolute crap out of Cloud.

He'd die canonically; like Aerith before him.

And don't even get me STARTED on the sword; because you haven't seen how gargantuan of a sword Ryutai's is, never mind how he also seems to wield it like a simple rapier.
Clearly I want overboard in it's design, that my teammates had to tone it down it a bit. It's still bigger though. I was not satisfied until it was, that meant physically comparing its size to the Buster to ensure Ryutai's was bigger and could still fit on his back properly.
Not only that, but the sword is unique as it is structured with two massive blades, and does animate in the original between three different modes:

I still had the render. (Mode 2)
And don't get me started on true dreamy eyes, no not dreamy—kind instead: yet strong, gentle, yet resilient, determined, comforting, hazel eyes.

You wanna see badass, what until you see his OmniSEVER; think 15 hits is something? I chuckle at your audacity, Cloud.

Now the Akechi is OK, you would've have been in the clear if you lead with that and only that. 👍
I heard them out. This pretty much is my only rant.

This is extremely niche and I doubt anybody on this forum cares about it but here we go:

I'm a Taylor Swift fan. I think she's...
Screenshot 2023 07 04 at 73944 pm

-> She has had rumours since 2009 which have been well documented on the internet
-> Taylor Swift 'beard' jokes are incredibly common in the industry eg. "You're not going to grow a beard like Taylor Swift?"
-> Her friends have made public comments/references about her being gay
-> She was literally outed by someone she worked with for about a decade
-> She released a song called London Boy which was meant to be a love declaration for her beard boyfriend. In the song there are two samples. She doesn't use them that often, but there are two in this song. The first is a soundbite from an interview of a celebrity talking about fake PR dates. The second is a song used during a lesbian sex scene in a movie she watched. How romantic. She also lied about when she made it found out by some observant fans. It was made shortly before the album was released and after the lead single was released. It was most likely because she was going to come out in 2019 (later confirmed by the person she worked with for about a decade) but it was scrapped last minute for unknown reasons and songs had to be cut and replaced
-> Her (glass) closeted relationship with Karlie Kloss was picked up on by the general public. They were pictured possibly kissing at a concert. This would become known as 'kissgate'
-> Remember how I said her friends have made references about her being gay? Yeah, a band she's friends with made a joke on stage saying "this is like kissgate" after two girls kissed on stage

Moving on, a good old fashioned subverted rhyme in her music:

"'Cause they don't know about the night in the hotel
They weren't ridin' in the car when we both fell
Didn't read the note on the polaroid picture
They don't know how much I miss you her"

Some more gay lyrics:

"And then you won't have to cry
Or hide in the closet
And just like a folk song
Our love will be passed on"

Interesting information on her song Love Story:

"Swift told Billboard magazine that the song is about "a love that you've got to hide because for whatever reason it wouldn't go over well. I spun it in the direction of Romeo and Juliet; our parents are fighting. I relate to it more as a love that you cannot really elaborate on - a love that maybe society wouldn't accept or maybe your friends wouldn't accept"

I know teenagers can be dramatic. I really do. This is just excessive, nobody gives that much of a damn if an upperclass white girl dates an upperclass white boy. Especially not society.

She said "gay pride makes me me" about this music video
Screenshot 2023 07 04 at 81241 pm

She posted a picture wearing a bisexual pride bracelet
Screenshot 2023 07 04 at 80430 pm

Do I even need to say anything about this? Homophobic protestors protesting ... a heterosexual?
Screenshot 2023 07 04 at 84912 pm

I'm too lazy to write more. This is already way too long lmao. Anyway, thank you for reading if you made it this far.

I'm a child of the 80s and always enjoyed the sone We didn't start the fire by Billy Joel. Can I just say I was pleasantly surprised by the Fallout Boy version? Like omg I've listened 5000000 times. But what's interesting they did put even positive things in it. It's not even a remake. More like a sequel.

And to hope on the ff vii bandwagon. Vincent valentine has my heart lol. I've stood by this since advent children.

Ouchie. I'm sorry, did I hurt you that badly? And what do you mean with 'this anime thing'. It's indeed a game, wether you like it or not and FFVII the original (not the remake) isn't even *that* anime-styled. Zack's pretty cool too so I don't mind him literally being a CTRL + C / CTRL+ V Blonde version of Zack. I like the names of most protagonists in the FF series, since they use different types of names instead of the common JRPG japanese names y'know. My favourite being Noctis from FFXV. (The story was incomplete but gameplay was still fun^^) You don't like the sadistic guys well i don't like the silly little cheery girls either, dunno what kind of personality you're looking for in a protag. && don't even get me started, the buster sword is impeccable, there's not a single flaw on it, though I agree it is possible for it to have been even better than it already is.

This may be a touchy subject for you, well it is for me too. I am not aware of FK or Ryutai, but it does look great honestly. Let me tell you, I absolutely love the Final Fantasy series, the persona franchise as well. Have a lovely day, sending you hearts and a picture even though you disagree with me. <3 A971E285 EC2B 4165 86EF 3ED2946E4506

A. No you didn't, I dislike FF7 and others like it in particular, not the FF series as a whole in particular; my favorite is FF9, that's the one I grew up with, I'm glad it's Sakaguchi's favorite too.

B. FF7 and FF in general does have an anime aesthetic, particularly FF7, and including its spin offs and novellas, and especially the original—ask any hardcore fan, you should know this yourself for crying out loud. And c'mon, look at Cloud, both in original his portraits and in the remake. Nomura's style is anime based, whether it's is concept arts or 3d models, it has an anime aesthetic; and yes, people love anime, combine the two = FF7 major love.

C. I only managed to play Crisis Core, until Cloud showed up again.

D. Names were a minor reason, as I said; minor reason, I just found it peculiar, slightly amusing.

E. I have my own interests when comes to personalities of protagonists, clearly—that's all subjective. Ryutai is not sadistic; quite the opposite in fact; once shy, almost an 'aw-shucks' type of guy, but then it changes, because its a world of warfare, so this and all the events that occur will undoubtly have an affect on him. Don't let my rant here solidify a faux view of a character; I'm not the only writer nor character designer for the game, after all.

F. The sword is a sword, what matters is how he controls the weapon, not letting the weapon control him.

All in all, that's the sort of bias I refer too, it creates a toxic player base environment, and players like that should keep quiet and stay away from games that have taken inspiration and followed their own path. No one wants to constantly here them bring up Cloud in completely different IP and character who is nothing like him besides some physical similarities (sword, fighting style, etc.), or constantly try to say he's better than them him, this that. It gets annoying real quick.

I enjoyed it too, but now that I have my own, I don't have time for it. Clearly if I didn't also love FF, it wouldn't have been inspired by it.

Yeah I think we all know Nomura's style, being 'anime' a bit. But I just felt like you were judging it by writing 'this anime "thing" is nothing'. Cuz it clearly isn't nothing & personally out of all final fantasy's, FFVII doesn't have the most anime aesthetic out of them all.

Jeez I'm not so sure why it feels like you're attacking my admiration for Cloud especially. Sure, there's plenty of other 'better' characters in different games, but damn, I prefer who I prefer, he's my type, what can I fucking say. Whatever you say though, I like Cloud, he's a well built protag imo. Don't wanna argue or anything, since this is a sensitive topic for me as well & I don't wanna get attacked any further lol. Play games you find cool I guess.

Not attacking you, read between the lines, I don't like Cloud, and I don't see characters as 'better' than others, every character is unique in their own way. Cloud included, obviously.
Don't feel someone's attacking because of your profound love for a character. No one is talking about you specifically, only the character from the game itself.

I didn't think that music being assembled by your hardware was possible. Seems like a lot of care was put into this game.
As far as I remember it was fairly common in the 1990's because of how common having MIDI sound modules (sound cards) were back then since a lot of machines running DOS didn't have on board audio at the time. (the following can be skipped because I unfortunately know way too much about how this dumb little DOS game works and it's just me blabbing. looking back a little after posting, holy fuck I overdid it)

To nerd out a little about how things work behind the scenes:

System Shock (We're talking about the 1994 game) stores music in .XMI files - these files are created by the Miles Sound System/Audio Interface Library's MIDIFORM executable. XMI differs from regular MIDI in a number of ways, with the most notable being the addition of a "sub-song" feature. This allows the merging of multiple MIDI tracks into a single XMI file which will then be separated in the XMI as separate sub-songs.

System Shock takes advantage of this by storing up to but possibly less than 49 sub-songs in a single XMI track. These are then called upon dynamically depending on the situation the player has gotten in, and will also be randomly applied to the music in order to help make the music feel less repetitive. There's three types of music in each track: Exploration Melodies, Combat Melodies, and Layer. Exploration contains the basic melodies played during normal exploration. Combat contains the basic melodies contained during Combat. Layers are melodies that play when specific events happen, like enemy encounters.

System Shock has two individual sets of XMI files, one for General MIDI/GM (GENMIDI) and one for Sound Blaster/OPL3 (SBLASTER), but most often used GM due to that being what most people had access to at the time (not everyone could afford a $100ish dollar Roland SC-55 back in the day).
System Shock's usage of the GM standard is incredibly basic. There's only five CCs used in the MIDI files:
CC0/CC32 (Bank Select, selects instrument variations on old devices)
CC1 (Modulation/Vibrato)
CC7 (Track Volume)
CC10 (Stereo Pan)
Using any more than this would break compatibility with some MIDI devices and soundfonts (resonance/cutoff effects don't work on pure GM devices).

Another very noteworthy feature about the System Shock soundtrack is its unique use of timbre (the perceived sound quality of a tone that distinguishes different types of sound and instruments). As I mentioned, the System Shock soundtrack was done through MIDI playback. MIDI files are data protocols, not audio files, that provide other devices with various musical information such as "Note On," "Pitch," "Velocity," "Tempo," etc. The gadget in this instance is your computer's soundcard. Each soundcard has a unique collection of sounds that are encoded into it, and MIDI uses a "Program Change" message to call on these different sounds. Then, when "Note On" messages are received (along with pitch and velocity), the soundcard knows what sound to play, at what pitch, and how loud, until a "Note Off" message for that pitch is received. The important part to note in this is that the sounds on each soundcard are preprogrammed. Most soundcards have their own takes on very generic sounds (Overdriven Guitar, String Ensemble 1, Clarinet) as well as some more unique ones (Guitar Fret Noise, "Goblins"). System Shock, however, used these sounds in very non-traditional ways. One of the backing arpeggios in L01 Medical's music is played back on two Bagpipes tracks, with chords being produced by rapidly playing notes on the Acoustic Guitar (nylon) channel. Here's just that layer so it's actually noticeable.

The last cool bit of musical implementation in System Shock's soundtrack is its use of delay. Due to System Shock's MIDI soundtrack, this effect had to be replicated by manually copying and pasting the MIDI Note On and Note Off messages at a later time in that instrument's channel. Delay is a musical effect that typically takes an input audio signal, waits for a duration, and then plays that audio signal back on top of the original signal. System Shock's soundtrack incorporates this overlaying as a musical subdivision of the beat, adding some really cool compositional elements to the music. Often you'll hear the soundtrack doing interesting phrasing, by something like playing an eighth note arpeggio with it delayed on top of itself three sixteenth notes late. As is typical in popular music, this was used more than simply as an effect; in System Shock, these delayed signals competing with the original melody joined to form a completely new melody, which was a crucial element of the musical composition.

I'll attach the dialog from the game that'll hopefully recompense this.

EX-SOLDIER
"Hoo-boy."

Ryutai
"You okay?"

EX-SOLDIER
"Yeah... just a little scratch."

[SET_STANCE_IDLE|KURAUDO]

EX-SOLDIER
"Nothing an EX-Soldier can't handle!"

[ANIM_GEN|RAI]

Ryutai
"Alright well, get some rest."

Ryutai
"You look like you need it."

EX-SOLDIER
"Rest?"

[ANIM_GEN|RAI]

Ryutai
"You shouldn't overexert yourself."

Ryutai
"You've got skill, good skill. I could learn a thing
or two from that move of yours."

Ryutai
"No hard feelings, right?"

[ANIM_GEN|KURAUDO]

EX-SOLDIER
"Yeah, why not?"

Ryutai
"Maybe, you could teach
me that skill of yours, it's unique."

[ANIM_GEN|KURAUDO]

Ryutai
"What is it like a combo... thunder slash?"

[ANIM_GEN|RAI]

Ryutai
"Octa... Omni... Master of All Slashes."

EX-SOLDIER
"Omnislash. This actually worked."

EX-SOLDIER
"My can of whoop-ass to the bitch who burned my
entire town and killed my first girl."

Ryutai
"Nice!"

Also, get this, there was time where I played both the original FF7 in its fullest, 100% playthrough, and the remake, I still have those commentary videos on my hard drive.
So much for me, huh? Guess I don't really hate him afterall, huh? 😅

Not only this, but wait until you find out what is his last name is.
After all, I was just an asset to FK's development, I'm not in charge of it's release or anything else.

I like anime
haven't watched anime in years
but I dislike modern art styles in anime because it suffers a lot from same face syndrome and seeing the same copy pasted stuff over and over is so boring even multiple different exaggerated facial expressions are hard to see now

whereas anime from the 90s and 00s (edit: also the 80s) could be on a scale from stereotypical to traditional to stylistic and you could tell which series was which or who was the animator or artist behind it

I don't know maybe its just me but it makes me feel old

also makes me feel like there's lower budgets now or something there's so much I could say about this

Experience is beautiful. How cold dead particles all came together to become aware of itself and be able to form perception. It's just a bit absurd that with the countless possibilities for experience, the host that contains our conscious happens to exist in a rather lackluster environment. However, experience is all just perception. Even in mundane daily life, one can experience something truly fascinating through daydreams and imagination. This is what makes the media that people drown out the dullness of reality with. What makes these dreams even more tantalizing is the very fact that they exist with infinity, with so many unrealized and thus unfathomable. Like how probability created this reality, it can do so with others, extending experience. And likewise, will this experience be continuous to those already experiencing with all this chance? I can't help but think of discrete experience as an attraction that you can opt out of anytime to try the next in line. Right now, I live as a clown in a circus, but, eventually through enough odd jobs, one lottery ticket will grant a ride to stardom overshadowing all that previous ennui.
I know I didn't really talk about my personal dreamscapes, but I think I am still working on it as I still experience it in my day to daydreams.
