Two years ago, the veterinarian son of a childhood friend ended life by putting himself to sleep, as he would an animal patient. He did it in his pick-up truck and local police, out on patrol. saw him sitting in the parking lot of his clinic in the middle of the night. I worked for a vet many years ago, but I do not remember the medication used to euthanize an animal. I have lived with many furry companions and over the years, I've seen vets turn to different methods in their attempt to create a painless environment for euthanasia (such as sedating first, etc.). Has this been discussed in the forum...giving oneself a shot or two or a quick IV? I don't recall the vets I worked with ever using Nembutal, but I don't really know -- I think the name on the bottle would have stuck in my mind. I do not have all of the facts concerning the son of my friend and am not comfortable pushing for them, but I have always assumed he injected himself, most likely into a vein in his arm.

Is this a plausible method for people? I just read a report of a woman administering Euthasol to herself and being found unconscious by her vet husband. She was revived. I see a photo of the bottle and the syringes. How is it used for a human? I have not seen vets go into a vein to euthanize my animals over the years, but a friend in New Orleans said that a vet did put her dog to sleep via IV meds. She had not seen it before and had also worked for a vet. It seems the son of the woman I knew years ago was able to spare himself some pain.

Thank you, by the way, for the quick response.

Sorry to re-vive an old thread, but an interesting topic. There have been increasing occasions across Europe where vet practices have been broken into, and the entire contents of the dangers drugs cabinet taken. This would be heavy sedatives like Ketamine and euthanasia drugs.. one practice in England experienced the same burglary twice within a few weeks.
I wonder who orchestrates this kind of theft and if it is for personal use, or for sale on the black market.
I would imagine the latter, probably quite a lucrative business.

They use pentobarbital, which I think is the same thing as Nembutal or a form of it. Some do it with one shot of it and some put them to sleep with something else first then give them the pentobarbital. I asked when I had my cat put to sleep. They ctb immediately. The heart stops. They do inject it into a vein. Usually in the front leg or sometimes shave the inside of a hind leg to do it there.
