Hello! After telling my mom i want to ctb (because we were going to take an appartement for me to move out tomorrow, and i thought it would have been to big of a waste of time and money) she brought me to the hospital. There the nurses offered me to sleep one night in a special departement in the psych ward where i can have my phone and everything so everyone can cool down and i can decide if i want to stay or not. Of course im planning on leaving tomorrow, i accepted cause i thought why not you know? But it already sucks and i want to go.

But now im scared it was a trap all along and they're planning on making me stay, does anyone knows if they can do that? I am 19 and French so legaly i can decide right if i want to stay right?

Not overly familiar with French law but if they let you have your phone then they will most likely let you go if you ask.

At least in America, if its involuntary then they definitely take your phone away.

Unfortunately these are the worst places on earth and the so called professional working there are the maddest people around and they get away with anything literally. Including crimes. It can go from volontary to involontary in a heartbeat. If your family or 2 doctors sign a paper requiring your detention you're done for. Your best bet is to lie through and through and convince them that you're ok so they let you out. Be agreeable with them if they recommend such and such outside, don't worry about sincerity, these places cannot help you but they can detain you by force, force drug you, dehumanize and torture you (I speak from experience I'm french too btw). If necessary ask for a lawyer, you have the right to ask for one. Do everything in your power to convince them and your family that you don't need to be there.

I don't mean to scare you but be very careful. These are very dangerous places, especially if you're naive.

Oh dear! Thank you for sharing your experiences! I will keep that in mind tomorrow morning (I wasn't planning on telling them i still want to ctb either way haha). Still, im so sorry if you had bad experiences with health professionals... Its so sad that the only people who can "help us" can also be the worse at their job...

You're welcome. I was stupidly naive the first times because I didn't know any better and it resulted in pure horror, these people function like prison workers on steroids unfortunately and are thoroughly dehumanized, even psychopathic most of the time, a good part of my trauma comes from such places... They are especially brainwashed when it comes to suicide and self harm issues which is the ultimate irony.. It says a lot about societal dysfunction...

They're pretty much the opposite of people who can help us. I would look for local associations of regular people, places where you can make friends in general, or peer groups if available, even a regular psychologist (not affiliated with a hospital) for help.

Good idea, I'll keep that in mind too!! I hope you found/will find someone who can truly help you!

This is very good advice to be calm and agreeable to suggestions and referrals. The point of the assessment is to see if you are mentally competent to know you need help and to ensure you are motivated to get it independently (i.e. outside the hospital).

The fact that you agreed to 1 night voluntarily works in your favor; it shows you are receptive to treatment. I think they will be easy on you tomorrow, as long as you can stay calm. Psych units are for people in acute crisis, and they need beds available for those cases.

About the stuff going on with your mom and the apartment- maybe the unit social worker can give you info or referrals on financial and housing support or even family therapy? Idk your situation, it's just a thought. Asking for that stuff shows future-oriented thinking- they love to see this because it means you are planning on living and not likely to ctb right after discharge. Wishing you good luck getting thru the 1 night and hoping you are free again soon.

I think you're really brave for agreeing to stay the night! You don't have to be super calm, just not overly emotional. It's natural to have a reaction to being there. I hope things go smoothly with this and with university.

The second part, nah they will take your phone regardless of the psych ward and whether you're voluntary or involuntary
