I know a lot of people have been damaged from psych meds and develop worse issues, but has anyone here gotten benefit ? I feel like I'm constantly losing my mind with anxiety. I feel like I can barely function day to day. I've heard so many horror stories like antipsychotics basically being a chemical lobotomy. And terrible things about the other psych meds too

I have made positive experience with medication. I also take antipsychotics. I tried a lot before I got one with not much side effects. But it obviously depends on which conditions you have. For me the benefits are way higher than the side effects. But I struggled a lot before I accepted to take them. It was a very wise decision to take them. They alleviated my pain a lot. But I had to try a lot of different medication in order to get one with significant impact.

Same for me. I also didn't start taking it right when I should have, but since I realized that I really had to, that's what helped me and even saved me. And at the moment I'm still taking it. Fortunately I've always done well with medication and haven't had any side effects, neither with the antidepressants nor with the tranquilizers.

I tried many psych meds. Usually without any effect, sometimes with terrible side effects without anything positive (like akathisia after aripiprasole or leucopenia after carbamazepine). But one medication - escitalopram - was perfect for me. Suddenly, I was able to not be depressed and anxious all the time. Unfortunately, I had to stop taking it because of bruxism. I like benzos, too, but it's not something safe for regulary taking. Reaction on meds is very individual, that's why it is so hard to find a good one. Of course taking extremely high doses of antipsychotics impairs functioning, but lower doses are usually safe and don't cause serious side effects.

How did you know about the leucopenia , I looked up what that means, did you have a blood test ?

Yes, luckily I had regular blood tests after suicide attempt when I was on the psych ward.

I have found SSRI medication helped me with anxiety. I tried a lot of other things - CBT, group stuff - but at the time I couldn't concentrate enough to put the necessary work in. Got to the point where I needed to go on meds to keep being able to function and work. Didn't see another option. Not felt like I could come off them fully though and it's been over 7 years. It's become a safety net for me. At higher doses I felt very detached and it was hard to feel any emotion. Probably what was needed at the time though to give my brain a rest and now I'm on a lower dose that's not the case. Just my experience though - I know it's not the same for everyone. Wishing you all the best.
