I start.

four-darks-in-red.jpg

This is a painting by Mark Rothko called "Four Darks in Red". Most of his painting are huge - this one is about 2,5m by 3m - and make a really strong impression. His main goal was always to deeply touch viewers emotionally. "I am interested in expressing the big emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on." he wrote. I was extremely touched by his paintings when I saw them irl and couldn't walk away somehow. I chose this painting because the darkest rectangle is I think the closest art can get to visually representing my mental state these past few months. If I could place myself on a canvas and say this is my experience, this is what I am living, it would be right at the centre of it.

Mark Rothko committed suicide aged 66 by overdosing on barbiturates and slitting an artery in his wrist.

Anyone else want to share some art?

I'm not too comp techy so hopefully that works. I love Frida's work as an artist but also her tenacity with life! She used her pain to try and make art/beauty from/with it and that impresses the shit out of me!!

Ugh.... Ok sorry. Frida Kahlo is a favorite artist of mine. She had back surgery and maybe fibromyalogia or chronic pain for sure. She was an woman artist from Mexico and a feminist for her time....I love how you can feel her pain but also that she uses such bright bold colors! I just really like her and her art work!! Sorry my brain is just misfiring all.over the place today....but I wanted to share in case someone else hasn't heard of her and may also like/relate....

The Scream - Munch

I know it's the most obvious painting known to man but it just sums up everything. Poor Munch suffered terrible mental ill-health his whole life starting from childhood. I don't think he would have made it had he not had his art.

"I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature."

Edvard Munch on The Scream

Edvard Munch's Diary, January 22, 1892.

I often wished I was artistic and able to express what I feel onto paper....i used to do that with words can't anymore. But paintings, like music, that evoke a response in me help me connect with what is often too hard to express.....thanks for this thread!! And Munch is another favorite....
Glad to know another Frida lover....I am totally against religion but if I was open she would be someone I could place some faith in ;) nice to meet a fellow appreciator!!

Great thread idea. I had a print of Van Gogh's Wheatfield with Crows hanging over my bed for years, when major suicidal ideation was a daily occurrence for me.

This is said to have been his last painting, and the uncertain direction of the crows supposedly indicates his indecision at ending his life or carrying on. The crows are also symbolic of death and rebirth.

I adore Van Gogh and this is by far my favorite painting of his. Didn't know that about the crows, that's really interesting, thanks!

Not anything sophisticated, but...

I'm very fond of this one in particular! It's been imbued with a lot of positive memories. I bought the 1000-piece puzzle on a whim while I was walking around downtown with my ex-girlfriend, I think we were there to see the New Year's fireworks display a year or two ago.

I remember working on it alone at first and I struggled a great deal with it... gradually, everyone I knew started working on it with me. My friends would come over just to work on it. My dad and brother would help on occasion and would ask how it was coming along daily. I even remember how ceremonious it was to fit the last piece in with my friends, brother, and ex-girlfriend.

I have the puzzle framed in my room. It brings out positive feelings still, but mostly regret nowadays

Anyway, it's called "Pooh's Afternoon Nap"

This masterpiece is a work by the one and only Caravaggio. My favorite artist!
Please enjoy the amazing resolution of this paint not even the current iPhone models can capture something similar. He painted this in 1601! Just wow.
This paint is called Crucifixion of Saint Peter.

No not from Poland. I forget where I first saw him

Here's another I like, not as grim.

Hiroo Isono. He was the artist for a video game called 'Secret of Mana' (which I never actually played). I must have first seen his artwork on some video game blog.

Gonna post some more stuff. I love David Hockney's and Georgia O'Keeffe's depictions of nature. I especially love the colours in Hockney's paintings and Georgia O'Keeffe is extremely sensual.

Hockney:

His paintings are also huge, you can see they a split into many smaller canvasses. I think I have a thing for large paintings... why paint small when you can paint big?

Not exactly art but artistic, the Sedlec Ossuary, designed with the bones of tens of thousands of plague victims.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary

wiki said:
The Sedlec Ossuary (Czech: Kostnice v Sedlci) is a small Roman Catholic chapel, located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints (Czech: Hřbitovní kostel Všech Svatých), part of the former Sedlec Abbey in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic. The ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, whose bones have, in many cases, been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.
