Has your thyoid been tested by a doctor? Do you know what the TSH score was on your test?

  • Yes my doctor tested it, no I don't know my score on the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test

  • Yes my doctor tested it, yes I do know my score on the TSH test and it is near the top, near 5

  • Yes my doctor tested it, yes I do know my score on the TSH test and it is in the middle, near 3

  • Yes my doctor tested it, yes I know my score and it is near 1 or 2 or below

  • No I've never had it tested but I don't want it tested

  • No I've never had it tested. I realize hypothyroidism can cause severe depression. I want the test

If you have depression has a doctor ever tested your thyroid with the TSH test? I had my long standing severe depression clear up when I was finally prescribed thyroid medication. I had been diagnosed with depression for years. This has been a miracle for me. Please get your thyroid tested if you have not done so and have depression. It might help. Hypothyroidism can cause depression. Ask for the TSH test. And get the results yourself. Your number on that test needs to be near 1 usually to clear up depression. Most doctors do not know this. If it's above 2 ask for a trial of thyroid medication to see if your depression is helped.

Some enlightened psychiatrists prescribe thyroid hormone routinely for everyone along with meds for depression.
Hypothyroidism is extremely common, especially for women.

I'm not sure who you are or why you choose to repeatedly bully me. I have physical pain from several things but not depression.
And did it work, because you're still here and I wouldn't call someone who routinely prescribes any medication to everyone "enlightened" I'd call them reckless, they could end up taking a healthy person into hyperthyroidism which has equally bad consequences.

You seem to be a living conundrum, looking back at your previous posts you seem to have almost every physical and mental ailment known to man, so I'm surprised you're bothering to highlight this one issue when you have another 999 to work on.
Yeah wow blackwidow. This person has a habit of posting misinformation, posts creating doubts around methods, all in the guise of being "helpful and caring". When she gets called out on incorrect information she goes back and edits her posts and says "I never said that", or deletes them entirely so you have to quote her so you can catch her in the act.

Slippery like a viper.
Nothing I've said here should warrant such an attack.

Parathyroid is also very important to test. Usually when that's all over the place it's a rice sized tumor that needs removed etc the difference is night and day apparently. I wish that was my problem and I could wake up from surgery feeling fantastic lol I'm glad you got your hypothyroidism under control! Don't forget your routine lab work every 3 months :)

My son was born with congenital hypothyroidism and has been on synthroid since almost birth. We did a trial run without the medication and he turned into a mean and hateful child i didn't recognize. It's just a pill a day and he's good to go, which I'm thankful for. ♡

I agree. Doctors should test for possible physical illnesses more often before prescribing antidepressants or antipsychotics like candy that might exacerbate a pre-existing condition. I'm not an expert, but even if the TSH value is an important indicator, you should possibly have the T3 and T4 value tested by an endocrinologist. It may also be important to rule out autoimmune thyroid disease (for example Hashimoto's thyroiditis) if you have issues with your thyroid.

I had my tested to see if it had anything to do with my depression. But the results came with no tiroide issue. I would like to have a brain scan though. But it's expensive and most docs don't prescribe that treatment.

I had to pay privately to get Tsh tested and it was 15 which is ridiculously high.
The doctors didn't rush to sort it and I had to push for treatment or they would have left it. I'm still only on 100 mcg thyroxine which isn't enough but gp want to finish some of us off.
I sweat buckets and it didn't help me socially not being able to get milk without looking like a marathon runner.

When I had mine tested the first time the results were at 4.5 which at that time was within upper but normal limits. I should have been put on thyroid hormone at that time but was not since it was still considered normal even though now it has been recognized the upper end of the test scores are out of range for normal. That's why it's important to see your own test scores on the TSH test.

Haven't noticed any difference at all depression wise since ive had my thyroid pills (had them for a few years, checked on to make sure it's still the right dosage every now and then) it kinda just makes me slightly less tired and slightly less prone to weight gain. I mean, means i'll have more energy to tie a noose and with not being fat wont need as big a rope, which is nice :sunglasses:

I have to get a high dose every day of thyroid to not have symptoms. Just taking a little doesn't help. It's really up to us to manage and stay on top of our test scores and symptoms.

I know got some thyroid issues, but never been tested for hypothyroidism because doctors said it was highly unlikely due to me being a man. Whatever that means....they viewed it as unnecessary and that it was a chemical imbalance of the brainnnnnnnn....yada yadda.

Men get it too. Doctors don't know about hypothyroidism for the most part. They don't take courses in this usually. It's a shame because a lot of needless suffering could be avoided if they were all on top of this.

You should absolutely request a second opinion. But women are more likely to have their thyroid affected, but still... doesn't mean men can't. They usually wait though until multiple symptoms are evident. I hope you get it sorted out!

They'll test me for testosterone levels and such, but I do have good testosterone and can produce when I feel like it (exercising or driving in traffic lol). I'm also wary of being put on any type of medication that affects any of the glands. My body is whack. I thought I had hyperthyroidism because I'm always so skinny (insanely high metabolism), but then I don't exhibit any other symptoms like being hot all the time. I feel cold often, have low moods, and other symptoms that are ideal with hypothyroidism.

I wanted to quote someone but their post disappeared.

I don't know about other countries, but here there is/was disagreement about the maximum TSH levels. Some labs have a lower limit, some have a higher limit. Some people have an individual "feel good" dose, independent of the standard values. Of course, it is important to talk to a doctor about this.

So the GP accuses you of causing problems when you try to self medicate even though only trying to help yourself because they often don't, but basically most doctors and people tell you to get on with it not realising what a debilitating condition it is.
I don't understand your thinking.

I get my test results and where I live I can also order a TSH test myself. I see the results and request the dose I need. I do realize if my hair starts to fall out I need a higher dose and also have other symptoms that go away when my dose is raised. I have found over the years my dose needs to be raised about every two years.

This actually is the correct thing to base the dose on. It's such an individual thing but generally if that TSH score is very low people feel better. Even below 1 is sometimes needed.

Probably not in your case. Yes hyperthyroidism can be deadly if it's extreme.

Hyperthyroidism can be dangerous, and may also cause varied symptoms of emotional overactivity with mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, etc... Symptoms with subsets of symptoms.

An endocrinologist is a trained specialist physician who diagnoses and treats hormone imbalances.

When I first got diagnosed with hypothyroidism I got a well known endocrinologist on the phone and asked him how would I know the best dose to take. He said take the lowest does possible to put my TSH in the normal range.

We now know that was incorrect. At that level I would be symptomatic. Most doctors still don't realize this.

Its actually much more common in men than people and GPs realise. Men should also get tested for thyroid hormone levels.

Yet another detail I have to stay on top of. They always try to prescribe generic levothyroxin. I have to take Synthoid or I'm symptomatic and many people experience this. Generic levothyroxin is apparently lower in thyroid hormone than Synthroid and not controlled from one batch to the next. It also has fillers that I'm allergic to. So each time I get a new prescription it's a whole new struggle.

Been there done that and I've got news for you. Tsh is a very poor measure of thyroid function. For many years I felt like shit on the synthetic dose of t4. I was treated like a hypochondriac. I started doing my own research and found out that t3 is the most important hormone. Of course you're not supposed to know that because big pharma pushes the synthetic t4 only med and doctors are given a financial incentive for pushing it. T4 needs to be converted to t3, not everyone can convert. In addition, every cell in your body has t3 receptors, which shows you how important it is. Through my own research, I found out there is a natural thyroid med that contains all the thyroid hormones you need, t1, t2, t3,t4. This.med gives you a negative tsh but it doesn't matter, so long as t3 is in range. If course the medical establishment won't even test t3 and will tell you it's dangerous. Fuck them. My life changed when I sourced my own ndt (natural dessicated thyroid). I switched in 2012, determined my own dose and get my t3 tested myself. I will never touch synthetic t4 again and will never use tsh as a marker. My t3 was woefully low before I switched. After I switched my hair stopped falling out, I could stay awake after 8pm and my eyebrows grew back. I believe that many people who are suicidal have too low t3.

Thanks for the valuable information. I had tried additional t3 a long time ago and couldn't tolerate it but I may try what you recommended. I've seen lots of people say they feel best if they take t3.

I've never had any doctor test more than TSH. I don't know why they won't do a complete thyroid panel, except the say it's not needed.

If I had the motivation to make improvements in my life, then making an appointment with my family doctor and figuring out how to check my hormone levels (step-by-step process) would be my first steps.
