Similar thing happens to me when thinking about my childhood, but for a different reason which I can hardly explain. Would guess it has to do with lots and lots of unprocessed trauma.

i haven't been able to remember anything from my childhood since i was 16, & now that i'm 21 i can't really remember anything before 17. ppl tell me it's bc it's a side effect of depression + trauma, but i kinda just think it's bc ive smoked copious amts of weed since i was 14. lol.

Sometimes the brain does strange things in order to protect itself. If you've had a traumatic or troubled upbringing, it's not uncommon for the brain to create gaps in our memory to try and block it out. Try to picture it like this: you're having a heated argument with someone and suddenly that person gets erased from your memory. You're still upset but you're missing the context as to why you're upset. This in turn makes you more confused and upset, and the more you ignore it, the bigger, more complex and persistent these feelings become. So much so that they might manifest themselves in the form of anxiety, depression and/or cptsd (complex post-traumatic stress disorder).

People are like memory foam, our traumas can warp and shape us. They might manifest themselves in the form of habits, addictions or a state of mind, without us even being aware that they were the cause.
