for example if someone wanted to use a door handle for partial, how could they correctly calculate the length needed for material? I try with different lengths and end up in an incorrect position, head too close to handle, or it's too long and I'm lying down

Imagine you're sitting (on your bottom) with your back to the door, if the handle is too close to the top of your head (e.g. almost touching), then you might have difficulty getting the rope around the handle and your head.

Otherwise, if the handle is far enough, then you just need enough rope to go around the handle and to your nose/mouth (so when you're suspended - and the rope is around your neck - then your bottom is off the floor).

That's how I practised last year with a dressing-gown cord but please be careful whilst experimenting

If you've decided on this method, I would use a belt (wide men's belt) secured to a closet rod. One end goes through the belt loop and then secure it with a clove hitch. Don't use something silly like the cord on a garment.

usually people attach the rope on the handle and pass it over the top of the door, however handles easily come off and breaking your nose on the floor is embarrassing times

My door handle is about level with my brow... the stronger anchor point is my bedpost.
