Sorry if I'm too late, but it should be easy enough to get voluntarily admitted if you indicate that you are suicidal, have a plan, and have the means to carry it out or are otherwise a danger to yourself (intentions of self harm and so on). You can say you were planning on drowning yourself nearby or something.

I wanted to go back in earlier this year but they didn't want me. Don't know what I was thinking really, I just didn't know what to do. I was in there in 2010 not of my own choosing. It was an experience but not one I wish to repeat
I'm in the US but if I was to go there and say I'm suicidal they can change it to involuntary and the sadistic quack can keep you indefinitely. I hope and really think it's probably different in the UK. I just have had way too many bad experiences here. I'm not trying to discourage you. If you really need the help and I'm sure from your decision that you do then just go. Just don't let them load you up on a bunch of shit. If something gives you side effects then don't take it. Make sure you know what you're taking.
Where in the UK? If you're Northamptonshire, go to London or Derbyshire or South Yorkshire. Crisis teams vary by country.

Yes, this is an important warning, I should have said it too. It's almost certainly not different in the UK. It's the same here in Australia.
If they are not satisfied you are safe to go home, they will upgrade you to involuntary and you will have to stay. You cannot just abscond like normal hospital. You have to work with the psychiatrists on getting out and convince them you are stable again. This is a danger with intimating suicidal intent as they will be unlikely to let you go if you get sick of it in 24 hours.
However, voluntary admission can in some countries get you faster access to public psychiatrists.

Listen to the doctors and cooperate with them! Even if you change your mind, once you're admitted 'voluntarily' they can decide to section you if they think you're unstable. If you truly want help then cooperating won't be a problem.
Also don't be afraid to ask for help! Although some doctors are assholes most of them are there to help you. Good luck with everything :)

I'm in US also, where I'm at when you try to self admit it's a waiting list because they so packed I couldn't get in even if I wanted to

Unsure just got a post of someone in a similar situ puts me right off

I don't know man. I mean I met some nice well meaning shrinks, we chatted etc but they all saw the same thing. Normal guy, clean med sheet, with whats called 'reactive' depression caused by mega T.
There's not a huge amount they can do for that, over and above what your doctor/shrink on the outside can do. I spent most of my time drinking tea and eating penguins in the office to be honest and chatting to whoever was on duty. Because lying in bed all day, listening to T and mad people groaning, shouting and hitting the walls is not actually that fun.
So really I wouldn't advise it unless you are really itching to kill yourself and don't actually want to.
I say this honestly and not to scare anyone. It did one thing. It steeled my resolve to not return long term, and cemented my decision that if that is looking anything like likely at some point, I would hands down be better off killing myself.
