Are obituaries automatic or is it something one's family does? I ask because I really don't want one.

It makes no difference. Spend no time or energy worrying about what will happen to you after you die.

Allow yourself to sleep peacefully.

They are not automatic. Someone has to provide an obit for you and funeral homes ask before even publishing your passing on their site if you funeral is held there so it would only be published on their site if you family told them to do so.
