Would numbing creams (used for tattoos) help numb the skin enough to cut deeply? Any ideas?

To CTB? Hell no. You're still going to feel it and it's gonna hurt like hell. Those types of creams only numb somewhat and on the surface of the skin. They ain't gonna numb your arteries.

I just need the initial numbing sensation of it getting past the top nerves. I don't actually self harm, but in my understanding, pain happens because of the sensations the nerves get. I thought a couple of pain relievers and the numbing cream might actually help me. But I very much appreciate the input. Cheers!

No problem. You just can't avoid pain with cutting like that.
