It's a clash of modern understanding versus the backbone of cultural identity.
Modern society is increasingly aware that that forcing positivity is psychologically harmful, hence the
reversable octopus plush.
On the other hand, it could also be argued that doing away with Christmas would take away a sense of a festive spirit that can unite a culture somewhat. Given that society is otherwise only united by a mutual pursuit of money, this seems to be important.
The religious aspect has been reduced over time, despite the very word meaning
mass of Christ. And yet, in a concerning sign of the times, religion has been replaced with a corporate push to pressure people into spending money to prove that they love their families.
Interestingly, while the notion that suicides spike at Christmas time is a myth, there
is a statistically significant
increase in January. This seems to suggest that it is indeed a distressing time for many, but most people survive the Christmas period itself.
