Personally, I think- even if we could do it, giving AI real sentience- emotions, the capability to feel pain and sense their own existence/ limitations would be cruel. I'd imagine a fair amount of people would realise it was cruel if they stopped to think about it. Why make a slave race painfully aware of its situation? I'm not sure we even have the capability to do it- if it's even possible. But still, as a theoretical concept, I think it's cruel.
I'm an antinatilist though. I tend to think it's cruel to bring any sentient creature here. Because we are so vulnerable to pain and because we have so little control over our lives. We get born into a system we have to comply to. Maybe we have more freedom than robots. But, it's a falsehood to believe we can all be anything we want to be. I could no more become an astronaut or a ballerina than a toaster could become a microwave! My brain and body simply don't lend themselves to those careers.
So, I wonder if it will mostly be natalists mucking about with trying to create sentient AI. Maybe they'll hope the same thing they must hope of their children. That they will find enough about life to be grateful they were given it. That they may not even realise they were born into wage slavery and planned obsolescence- as we are.
Sometimes I think it would be comforting to weep alongside a sentient AI at our shared predicament but then- I hope we spare them that. If we don't, we deserve to be annihilated- I believe.
Lol. Imagine an AI suicide partner. That could happen I suppose. We give them a delayed command to 'force quit' after they assist us.
