I don't truly believe in my religion and I know it's probably bs but deep down I have this fear that i'm wrong and it's true. In my religion the punishment for suicide is eternal hell and you will be punished by commiting suicide with the same method again and again. So if you hung yourself, you will hang yourself again and again in hell. For ever.
My parents are extremely religious and if they found out I killed myself, I think they would be too ashamed to admit it and would tell people I died in some sort of accident.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this too, love.
My family is similar as well. They tell me if I die unnaturally I'll be stuck in limbo and not be able to be at peace.
Anything is peaceful than the life I live right now.

I believe after death i will never feel pain, nor remember anything nor exist at all forever as before i was born for 13 billion years.
I agree with Nabokov and Mark Twain in the following quotes:
Nabokov:
"The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. Although the two are identical twins, man, as a rule, views the prenatal abyss with more calm than the one he is heading for (at some forty-five hundred heartbeats an hour)"

Mark Twain :""I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it."

To the OP and Moonicide: All religions are created by men and none of them have a clue about what really happens to a person after they leave this world. They are all designed to control and dominate people through fear. There is plenty of actual research if anyone wants to know more about the subject.

I am in the exact same boat as you, every word rings like my story. I haven't even thought about it, but my parents would probably cover up too. I'm not in a good mood to expand further on my thoughts, but I'll come back here and discuss this religion thing that hinders my plans for eternal peace.

I'm an Episcopalian. My God is not a tyrant that needs humanity to sing his praises. My God is within all of us, outside all of us, and in the spaces in between. My God does not test us, life just is. I don't put human limitations on my God. My God doesn't care how you worship so long as that worship is being kind to others.

There no Hell. There is no purgatory. There is only peace, love, and acceptance.

It took me awhile to truly believe this. So if you're a Christian remember to love your neighbor as yourself. If you're not a Christian or a believer in anything remember to love your neighbor as yourself. The world would be a better a place if we tried to be kind to one another.

This is an actual psychology theory called Pascal's wager that analyzes this. Essentially if there is no God there is nothing to fear. If there is and he is a benevolent God, in some sects of Religion everything is preordained and it was all part of God's plan and Jesus died for your sins and are forgiven and go to heaven. The final is a angry God, which is what you are afraid of, but nobody knows. Some people who commit suicide see it as a blessing that God has chosen you to be with a deceased relative or if they have physical ailments. Some even in a note say I had a dream that God wanted me to join him because you are a great person and was chosen. But you know your parents and none of us know what happens after death.

what if you killed yourself with N or a similar drug and had the most peaceful passing possible, it may even be pleasurable since it interacts with GABA. an eternal "torture" by literally sleeping while completely unconcious just seems like a non religious death to me.

not to ad fuel to the fire, but what if this life is your punishment for already having killed yourself many lifetimes before and you are just repeating it over and over? i really don't think that a god that punishes for eternity exists, there may be a way out of this cycle since almost every single religion believes in some form of redemption.

and who's to say what religion is the real one, if there's even a real one at all, did you know that the mayans had a goddess that assisted those who commited suicide to reach heaven? if there is really a higher intelligence that created us, i don't believe that it has any real reason for eternal punishments, what would be the point?

this is all about perspective and making peace with your decision, it is important to remember that regardless of how we die, we are all going to die one way or the other. and even if there is an afterlife full of turture, how different is it from a life that is already hard enough that we wish to end it ourselves.

i lost my faith long ago, maybe i never had it to begin with, but i still want there to be an afterlife of some sort, i hate everything about myself but i've grown attached to this consciousness and to the little things that i want answered about life itself, so instead of fearing eternal hell or vanishing forever, i just think of death as a natural step in this journey, it is not something to be feared since i'ts inevitable either way.

i hope that this wall of text helped you to some degree.

So if you die from heroin overdose, you get to spend the rest of eternity feeling chill as fuck? Sign me up!

If you're going to apply Pascal's Wager, you'd have to apply them not only to the judeo-christian god but to all gods, known or unknown. There could be a god that rewards you for bad deeds and punish you for good ones. They're all equally likely, which is to say not at all.

if God didn't want me to kill myself, then why would He create me with mental issues? truly, why would God allow suffering of any kind and then punish those who escaped that suffering by their own hand? if i commit suicide, i am not causing harm to anyone but myself, so it is not a sin. that's how i see it, personally

Gods are created by other men to impose their morals on you. Hell after death does not exist. But Hell in life definitely does.
By the way, I'm an atheist, but even if you are a Christian, you should know that the Bible does not talk about Hell, it's a creation from the Church. This is what the bible says about Death: "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.
Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in the Grave, to which you are going." Ecclesiastes 9: 5,6,10

Not for myself, it doesn't. My train of thought on that 'nonsense' was to help alleviate the fears some have over death, sorry if that's a problem.

Same! I had religion hammered in my head for the majority of my childhood and even though I don't believe a lick of it, the thought still scares me that it may be true. I think to myself - if God actually loves us, why would so many of us have to suffer? Either there's a God and he just doesn't care, or there is no God. Then I have those back of the head ideas saying that if so many people believe in this God, he must be real. The religions I see as the most realistic are Hinduism and Buddhism (and not just because I'm Asian lol) because they imply reincarnation or an end of suffering at some point without the whole implementation of a narcissistic overlord (though I'm not going to get into that). At the end of the day, God said he created earth for man. If he intended for us to suffer so much in this creation, what's not to say that heaven isn't the same suffering. I'd rather be partying in purgatory with my fellow gays and pcp addicts.

I can tell what religion you believe in based on the punishment you mentioned. I believe in the same religion and i face the same fears you are facing.
I wish I had direct communication with God so i can ask, argue how come a person like me who never hurt anyone never caused any harm to anyone, who likes to help people being tortured by this mental agony and he is allowing that to happen. They say believers who endure any kind of misery, illness, poverty, fear etc.. Will be rewarded heaven for Thier patience. I don't want heaven i didn't even choose to come to this life.
Imagine someone living in extreme pain and if he or she chooses to end it they will suffer in eternal hell!!!!!!!!!!.
This just adds pressure to our fucked up mental struggle.
Bad people like drug dealers, spurious politicians or corrupted officials are enjoying their wealth and happy life while people like us are drowning in wretchedness every single moment of our lives.
I just don't have logical explanation for it.

I particularly enjoy the first quote. Have you read Nabokov's The Eye? It's about a man who finds himself unable to move through life any longer after losing his job and his mistress. He shoots himself and at his next point of consciousness, he cannot tell if he has survived his suicide attempt or if he is trapped in an afterlife/limbo state.

It is comforting to know your parents have a solid grip on their vanity. I hope you don't die or anything and cause them embarrassment.

Real question...are they concerned about your wellbeing?

What if after we die we exist in some other dimension? Not necessarily heaven or hell but like a grey fog where we just stumble around and do nothing but are still aware? This would also be torture it sounds like to me. What if we are out of our physical body but still aware and can see everybody and our families in the physical world but can't communicate with them?like being aware and conscious while our funeral is happening and seeing our loved ones crying and such but can't communicate or do anything about it. In other words just stuck to suffer again. This would be total bs. I don't know. There are different theory.
There is a website called soulproof. It has a lot of info about suicide and what they think might happen afterwards. Guy claims to have communicated with people who have died. Spirts. He seems to think that there is no eternal hell. In the end I just don't know. What I do know for sure though is what I have now and the suffering in this life is very much real.

( re-posting a statement I made on another thread )

My opinion :
After death, you'll go to "heaven" (there is no hell), but it's not necessarily a 100% free ride.
You'll have a "life review", where you evaluate the life you just lived, to try to extract the lessons learned.
But for the most part it will be a good experience, and support will be given where needed from guides, etc.
Your new life in heaven may last quite a while, but if your soul hasn't reached it's full potential of enlightenment yet, then it's possible that you may eventually re-incarnate, but not until you've had a damned good rest, and are ready to "go at it" again....
But I wouldn't worry too much about the re-incarnation bit, for now you just can just think of it as you're going to heaven for a pretty long time....

any god that creates people sick and commands them to be well -- on pain of infinite torture for finite "sins" -- is worth maximal contempt. i'll gladly skip into hell if it spares me from having to to worship such a depraved, vain, unfeeling stain.

i'm extremely saddened to read of people whose parents are so ensnared by supernatural fears that they seek to invalidate their children's very real suffering.

The video posted above ('The egg' from kurzgesagt) talks about a similar concept, in which all humans are basically the same 'grand soul' and the universe is just our 'egg' in which 'we' have to mature, by interacting with ourselves. If we ever manage to fully mature, we will ascend and become a 'god' ourselves.
Not that I believe in this (I'm more nihilistic), but it's a nice idea.

And regarding the topic of 'suicide is a sin', I think it's important to remember why religions came up with their rules and guidelines. Most of them serve a real 'materialistic'/cultural purpose. E.g. the restrictions on pork. But today, these purposes barely exist/matter any more, the guidelines are outdated.

For suicide, my guess is that in ancient times, when humans where living in much smaller groups, the death of an individual person had a much greater impact on the structure and functioning of their group than it does have today, besides the emotional damage done. So if you'd kill yourself, you'd risk the well-being (or even survival) of many other members, which is why suicide could be seen as very selfish, also bringing shame over your (closer) family. Thus it was considered a sin.
(These are just my thoughts, never looked it up, so it may be wrong. I think I saw a similar explanation in this forum before)

Religion is a man made set of rules that are drilled into people's minds. I don't understand religion at all. If there was this big man in the sky called God who could perform any miracle don't you think this world would be a better place and we would all be healthy and happy. You're not going to go to hell and suffer for eternity. Believe me. You're going to find peace.
