I feel so sad for her. My grandma is 95 years old, and as of this week has finally been taken to a nursing home. She's lived in the same house since 1964, but has reached a point where her dementia is too severe for her to continue unsupervised.
Dementia is the worst. Knowing how unpredictable it is, and how you have moments of lucidity and long-term memories that remain intact intermingled with confusion, fear, and not knowing what the hell's going on.
Of course she's had a great run, but it's terrible to see this happen to someone in your family. From what I gather, she's in her last few weeks and they will only do the bare minimum to keep her going. Life sucks and then you die, I guess.
