I really like the emotional music in AoT. Listened to this a lot. It evokes heavy emotions inside of me.

I've been into Duster big time recently. I guess you'd consider it "slowcore" or "sadcore", it kinda has parallels with shoegaze and old school emo. Similar artists would be Codeine, Idaho, Slint, Carissa's Wierd, Red House Painters, Have a Nice Life.

For sheer misery, Joy Division, Radiohead and The Smiths always spring to my mind. Along with a lot of Nirvana. And the Verve. Bittersweet Symphony etc. Getting old...

I guess the only modern music I listen to now is from Anime...I did find some songs off the Angel Beats and Guilty Crown soundtracks beautifully sad.

Ok, let me suggest one that you (possibly) might not know:

Morning Rise by Whipping Boy.

Some truly sad, desolate music on Manic Street Preacher albums, such as the Holy Bible and Suede records (Asphalt World).

I'll shut up now!

Gonna bring out the Big Guns:
Franz Schubert - Winterreise, Op. 89 (1827)
Sergei Rachmaninoff - Prelude in B minor Op. 32, No. 10 (1910)
Alban Berg - Violin Concerto (1935)
Dmitri Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110 (1960)

Oh and let's not forget:
Lili Boulanger - Clairières dans le ciel (1914)
Sergei Prokofiev - Memories of Sunlight Op. 27, No. 3 (1917)

And of course:
Modest Mussorgsky - Songs and Dances of Death (1877)

I could go on and on. I haven't even gone into African American Spirituals or Western popular music yet.
