I tend to avoid motivational/inspirational podcasts, but this one was suggested to me on spotify and decided to listen to one episode out of curiosity. This episode was about the "hedonic treadmill", or the fact that people eventually come back to a certain default level of "happiness" no matter what happens to them. The narrator of the podcast framed this as a positive thing, like saying, "no matter what happens, humans bounce back to their normal level of happiness."

It made me think about how sadness and loneliness are basically my default state and always have been. That no matter what happens (shy of one or two possible things I believe could "save" me but have great reason to believe will never occur), I will always return to a "steady personal baseline" of misery. For people with lifelong depression, the concept of the hedonic treadmill is not encouraging, it's damning. It's frustrating to me that normal people fail to realize this.

And this is why I avoid motivational podcasts...

Things that are positive makes me feel worse in general. I cannot stand toxic positivity. Anyone who believes in anything like that must be delusional. For many people life is just suffering and misery. Happiness does not even exist to me, instead there is only pain.

"Ignorance is bliss." As long as you don't see the real TRUTH behind this so called LIFE. You as an individual will always find happiness and positivity even in the most fuck up situation.

Ever since I became suicidal I realized that everything in this world is meaningless. I saw what this so called LIFE has to offer me. It offered me nothing but hate and pain.

I default back to optimism and I know I'm delusional. It feels like a survival drive. I really do think we can drastically change our internal state, but you have to remember that I'm delusional.

I don't necessarily think defaulting to optimism makes you delusional. It could be a survival drive. I don't even think that way of thinking is entirely bad or false, it just annoys me when people think that just because something works for them it will work for everyone. So if you took that optimism and tried to make sweeping statements projecting that optimism onto everybody, THEN you'd be delusional.

Most things "recovery" orientated just make me feel worse. A lot of the times it reveals just how much people look down on people suffering, and consider it a personal character flaw, and essentially pathetic. There is virtually no thought given to those suffering with lifelong or near lifelong issues, it is assumed that someone is just going through a temporary situation or low mood as a result of something solvable or that you can easily "get over" and bounce back to "how you used to be." Always assuming you have the tools, skills, life experiences, outlook, brain wiring, money, support networks, or even the desire to do the things they suggest in the first place, if they even suggest anything actionable at all.

There's these religious guys on TV at nite. They say send them money and God will give you back much more money. Incredibly stupid, but people do it!
